Discovery of this dinosaur occurred during a major scientific expedition. In February 1984, Guillermo Rougier found the nearly complete skeleton. This was part of an expedition led by the Argentine paleontologist José Bonaparte. The team was working on the project "Jurassic and Cretaceous Terrestrial Vertebrates of South America." This project was supported by the National Geographic Society. The bones were found in the sedimentary rocks of the La Amarga Formation. This location is in the Picún Leufú Department of Neuquén Province.
Amargasaurus was a herbivore, which means it ate only plants. It lived in an environment shared with at least three other sauropod genera. Studying Amargasaurus helps scientists understand the evolution of the Diplodocoidea. This group is characterized by box-shaped snouts and narrow teeth. Both Dicraeosaurids and Diplodocids have bifurcated neural spines. However, the spines in Dicraeosaurids like Amargasaurus were much more elongated. This specialization shows how different lineages of dinosaurs adapted to their environments. The discovery of such a complete skeleton provides a vital link in our understanding of Cretaceous life. It allows researchers to reconstruct not just bones, but the possible shapes and behaviors of these ancient animals.
