Later, in 1912, more fossils were found in Egypt. Ernst Stromer described the Spinosaurus in 1915. Sadly, his original specimen was destroyed in 1944 during a bombing raid.

In 1983, scientists found a nearly complete skeleton in England. This was the Baryonyx. Since then, many new kinds of spinosaurids have been found in places like Niger and Spain.

Scientists have studied the evolutionary relationships of these dinosaurs for a long time. Spinosaurids are proposed to be closely related to megalosaurid theropods from the Jurassic. Both groups share an elongated skull and an enlarged claw on the first finger. This connection forms a group known as Megalosauroidea. However, some researchers argue that this group is paraphyletic. They suggest spinosaurs might represent the most basal tetanurans. Others propose they are basal carnosaurs. This debate continues as new fossil evidence is discovered.

The history of spinosaurid discovery is filled with remarkable finds. The first fossil was a single tooth found around 1820 by Gideon Mantell. In 1841, Richard Owen mistakenly named it *Suchosaurus*, thinking it was a crocodile.

Spinosaurids varied greatly in size. The smallest known genus from good material is *Irritator*. It was roughly 7 to 8 meters long. Other genera like *Ichthyovenator*, *Baryonyx*, and *Suchomimus* were larger. *Oxalaia* may have reached lengths between 10 and 12 meters. The largest known genus is *Spinosaurus*. It could reach lengths of up to 15 meters. It had a body mass similar to an African elephant. The genus *Sigilmassasaurus* may have been just as large, though its exact classification is still disputed.

These animals were highly effective predators. Direct evidence shows they were at least partially piscivorous, meaning they ate fish. Other fossils indicate they also fed on pterosaurs and other dinosaurs. Their large size may have been a byproduct of their semiaquatic lifestyle. By hunting in the water, they did not have to compete with other large terrestrial theropods for food. This allowed them to reach massive lengths. Their specialized bodies show how animals can adapt to exploit new environments.
