Zheng Yi Sao was one of the most successful pirate leaders in history. She lived in China during a time of great change.

This pirate group worked using a special system. The confederation was made of six different fleets. Each fleet used a specific color for its flags. They used red, black, blue, white, yellow, and purple flags. Zheng Yi led the largest group, called the Red Flag Fleet. In 1805, the leaders signed an agreement to stay united. They agreed to give up some of their own power. This helped the whole group become much stronger. By 1805, the fleet had about 400 junks. These junks were traditional Chinese sailing ships.
Leadership changed when Zheng Yi died in 1807. He fell overboard during a heavy storm called a gale. Zheng Yi Sao took control of the pirates after him. She had help from a man named Zhang Bao. Zhang Bao was the adopted son of her husband. He was a strong leader of the Red Flag Fleet. Even though he was a commander, he listened to her. A government official reported that Zhang Bao always asked her for advice.
During her time in power, the pirates were very active. They fought against the Chinese navy and the Portuguese Navy. Between 1808 and 1809, the pirates won many battles. They used many ships to raid towns and rivers. The group was huge, with 40,000 to 70,000 pirates. They even faced the Portuguese ships near Macau. The Portuguese used modern tools like rifles and cannons.
Eventually, the fighting came to an end through a deal. In 1810, Zheng Yi Sao negotiated a surrender. She met with officials from the Qing regime. This was a very smart move for her and her people. The deal allowed her to keep 24 ships. She also kept over 1,400 pirates under her command. Most importantly, she did not go to jail. She lived a peaceful and prosperous life after her time at sea. She died in 1844 at the age of 68.
Zheng Yi Sao, also known as Shi Yang, was a powerful pirate leader in the South China Sea. She was active from 1801 to 1810. Historians describe her as one of the most successful pirates in history. She rose from a humble life to command a massive confederation of ships. Her leadership helped a group of many thousands of pirates challenge major world powers.
The pirate confederation functioned through a highly organized system of fleets. In 1805, different pirate leaders signed an agreement to work together. They agreed to sacrifice some of their personal autonomy for the group. This created a unified force made of six distinct fleets. Each fleet was identified by a specific flag color: red, black, blue, white, yellow, and purple. Zheng Yi commanded the largest group, known as the 200-Ship Red Flag Fleet.
Zheng Yi Sao's path to power began with her marriage to the pirate Zheng Yi in 1801. Zheng Yi came from a family of pirates with roots in the Ming dynasty. By 1805, the fleet grew to approximately 400 junks. These junks were traditional Chinese sailing vessels used for transport and combat. The total number of pirates in the confederation was between 40,000 and 70,000 people.
Leadership changed abruptly on November 16, 1807, when Zheng Yi died. He fell overboard during a gale, which is a very strong wind. Zheng Yi Sao took control of his operations immediately. She was supported by Zheng Yi's nephew, Zheng Baoyang, and his son, Zheng Anbang. She also had the vital support of Zhang Bao. Zhang Bao was Zheng Yi's adopted son and the commander of the Red Flag Fleet.
Under her guidance, the confederation became much more active in 1808. Zhang Bao and Zheng Yi Sao led many successful military engagements. In 1808, they destroyed a Chinese fleet of 35 ships near Mazhou Island. These victories reduced the Chinese provincial fleet by half. This allowed the pirates to enter the Pearl River more easily. In 1809, Zheng Yi Sao personally led the Red and White Flag Fleets in a major battle against Provincial Commander Sun Quanmou.
The pirates also faced conflict with the Portuguese Navy near Macau. The Portuguese used modern armaments like rifles and rifled cannons. These cannons could fire explosive shells at enemy ships. In 1809, the pirates captured a ship belonging to the Portuguese governor of Timor. This led to intense naval battles in the waters near Macau. Despite the advanced technology of the Portuguese, the pirates remained a massive threat to regional stability.
By 1810, the situation led to a major diplomatic shift. Chinese officials sought help from the Portuguese to stop the pirates. A formal agreement was signed in Macau on November 23, 1809. This agreement involved the Viceroy of Liangguang and Portuguese magistrates. The Qing government agreed to pay 80,000 taels to outfit Portuguese ships for six months. This cooperation aimed to end the constant pirate invasions.
Zheng Yi Sao eventually used her influence to secure a peaceful end to her career. In 1810, she negotiated a surrender with the Qing authorities. This was a very strategic decision. The terms allowed her and Zhang Bao to avoid prosecution for their actions. They were permitted to keep 24 ships and over 1,400 pirates. Zheng Yi Sao lived a prosperous life after leaving the sea. She died in 1844 at the age of about 68.
