He started building his first ship, the LZ 1, in 1899. It was built in a floating hangar near Lake Constance. The LZ 1 took its first flight on July 2, 1900.

Later, a ship called the LZ 4 crashed in a storm in 1908. This accident actually helped the inventor. Many people donated money to help him continue his work. This support allowed him to start a real airship company.
