Weather conditions at Lakehurst were poor due to afternoon thunderstorms. Captain Pruss took passengers on a tour over the New Jersey seashore. He waited for the storms to pass before returning to the airfield. At 7:00 p.m. EDT, the Hindenburg made its final approach. The landing was difficult because the ship was stern-heavy. The crew dropped water ballast to try to balance the ship. They also valved gas to control the descent. At 7:21 p.m., the mooring lines were dropped from the bow. The port line was connected to the ground winch and became overtightened. 
At 7:25 p.m., the Hindenburg caught fire. Witnesses reported seeing a dim blue flame before the main fire. Some thought this might be St. Elmo's Fire, which is static electricity. Others saw flames near the ventilation shafts of gas cells 4 and 5. The fire spread very rapidly across the fabric skin. The ship's destruction took only about 32 to 37 seconds. During the crash, the rear end of the structure imploded. The bow lurched upward as the stern collapsed. 
The accident resulted in 35 fatalities. This included 13 passengers and 22 crewmen. One additional person died on the ground. There were 97 people on board during the flight. This total included 36 passengers and 61 crewmen. Despite the danger, Navy personnel conducted rescue operations. Chief Petty Officer Frederick J. "Bull" Tobin led the Navy landing party. He shouted orders to keep his men steady during the rescue. 
This disaster was captured by many news crews and photographers. Herbert Morrison provided a famous eyewitness radio report. His recording was broadcast the next day on WLS in Chicago. Newsreel teams from Pathé, Movietone, Hearst, and Paramount were present. Photographer Sam Shere took a famous photo while shooting "from the hip." The publicity from these reports shattered public confidence. It marked the abrupt end of the airship era. People began to favor airplanes for long-distance travel instead.
