To breathe on land, many woodlice use pleopodal lungs. These are paddle-shaped appendages that use branched air tubules called pseudotrachea. Some species have even evolved spiracles, which are small openings that control airflow into these lungs.
The evolutionary history of the Oniscidea is quite ancient. Molecular clock analysis suggests they may have colonized land during the late Paleozoic era. However, the oldest physical fossils date to the mid-Cretaceous period, roughly 100 million years ago. These fossils have been discovered in amber deposits across Spain, France, and Myanmar. 
There is an incredible variety of species within this group. In 2014, scientists had validated 3,710 species, though some estimates suggest there are between 5,000 and 7,000 species worldwide. This diversity is reflected in their many common names. Depending on where you live, you might call them pill bugs, sow bugs, or slaters. Some people even call them "wood pigs." Woodlice also play a unique role in scientific research. Because they can accumulate toxic heavy metals in their hepatopancreas, they serve as bioindicators. This means scientists can study them to judge the level of pollution in an environment. They are also part of complex food webs. For instance, they are a primary food source for the woodlouse spider, Dysdera crocata.
