The thorax contains seven segments called pereonites, each bearing a pair of jointed limbs called pereopods. The abdomen has six segments called pleonites. These animals possess a chitinous exoskeleton made of overlapping, articulated plates. This structure provides protection while allowing for flexibility. They also have two pairs of unbranched antennae on their heads. In land-dwelling species, the first pair of antennae is often vestigial, meaning it is greatly reduced.

Short-tailed forms have a short pleotelson and are often sedentary. Long-tailed forms have a long pleotelson and broad uropods used for swimming. These advanced forms may have radiated on the ancient supercontinent of Gondwana about 200 million years ago.

Isopods show incredible diversity in size and habitat. Of the 10,000 species, about 4,500 are marine, mostly living on the seabed. Another 5,000 species are terrestrial woodlice, while 500 species live in fresh water. Sizes vary from tiny Microcerberidae species to the giant isopod, Bathynomus. These giants live in the deep sea and can grow nearly 30 centimeters long. Some large species are even fished for food in Japan and Mexico. Terrestrial forms, such as the family Armadillidiidae, often live in cool, moist places. Many of these can perform volvation, which is the act of rolling into a ball to conserve moisture or defend themselves.
