He gave us the word "scientist" that we use today. He also created words like "linguistics" and "astigmatism." He even helped his friend Michael Faraday. He suggested words like "electrode," "ion," and "cathode." These words help us talk about science clearly. Without his help, describing new discoveries would be much harder.

Whewell also led a huge project to study the ocean tides.

He wanted to know how tides move across the world. To do this, he organized thousands of volunteers. This was one of the first citizen science projects ever. In 1835, people from many countries helped him. This included people from France, Spain, and the United States. They recorded the tides every fifteen minutes. This massive amount of data helped him understand the sea. He even won the Royal Medal for this work in 1837.

Using his data, Whewell created special maps.

He used lines called "cotidal lines" to show the tides. These lines connect places where the high tide happens at the same time. By looking at these maps, he made a smart prediction. He said there was a spot in the North Sea where the tide does not rise or fall. In 1840, a sailor named William Hewett proved him right. He found this "no-tide zone" using a ship called HMS Fairy. This showed that Whewell's math and maps were very accurate.

Whewell spent much of his life at Trinity College in Cambridge. He was a student there and later became the Master of the college.

Whewell, however, followed the older tradition of the natural philosopher. He investigated a vast range of topics. These included mechanics, physics, geology, astronomy, and economics. He was also a poet, a translator, and a theologian.

He eventually became a fellow and a tutor at the college. Later, he served as the Professor of Mineralogy from 1828 to 1832. He also held the Knightbridge Professorship of Philosophy from 1838 to 1855. In 1841, he succeeded Christopher Wordsworth as the Master of Trinity College.
