Dee's early life was filled with intense study. He attended St. John's College, Cambridge, starting at age 15. He became an original fellow of Trinity College after its foundation in 1546. During his time at Trinity, he designed stage effects for plays. He used pulleys and mirrors to create illusions. One effect showed a scarab beetle flying to Jupiter's palace. Dee later said these mechanical tricks helped start his reputation as a magician.

His travels across Europe expanded his scientific knowledge. He studied in Leuven and lectured on Euclid in Paris. He became friends with famous map makers like Gerardus Mercator. Dee also studied with mathematicians like Federico Commandino in Italy. He eventually returned to England with many mathematical and astronomical instruments. In 1552, he even investigated a possible perpetual motion machine with Gerolamo Cardano.

Dee's career included both religious and political roles. He took Catholic orders in 1554. Later, he became a Protestant when Elizabeth I took the throne. As an advisor, he helped plan voyages to the New World. He is credited with coining the term "British Empire." He also wrote about maritime empires in 1577.

He also wrote a mathematical preface for a translation of Euclid. This work helped people see how math connects to other sciences. His library in Mortlake became a major center for scholars. He even suggested creating a national library for England.

In his later years, Dee turned toward the supernatural. He wanted to use scrying to communicate with angels. Scrying is a way of looking into a surface to see visions. In 1582, he began working with a man named Edward Kelley. They believed they could receive knowledge through these spiritual conferences. They traveled through Europe to meet leaders like Emperor Rudolf II.

These travels were often difficult and controversial. In Poland, King Stephen Báthory required that any revelations match Church teachings. Some people in England suspected Dee was a spy for the Queen. In 1587, a strange event occurred during a conference. Kelley claimed an angel ordered them to share their wives. This caused Dee great distress, and he ended the sessions immediately.

Dee's final years were marked by hardship. When he returned to England in 1589, his home was vandalized. His library was ruined and many books were stolen. He struggled to find support despite his former status. He eventually served as the warden of Christ's College, Manchester. However, he died in London while living in poverty. His exact gravesite remains unknown to this day.
