He corresponded with Henri Vilmorin, a French breeder working on wheat for dry areas, and other breeders in India.
William Farrer was born on April 3, 1845, in Docker, Westmorland, in northwest England. He was the son of Thomas Farrer, a tenant farmer, and Sarah William. Farrer was a gifted student who won gold and silver medals in mathematics at Christ's Hospital in London. He later earned a B.A. from Pembroke College, Cambridge, in 1868. In 1870, he emigrated to Australia to seek a drier, warmer climate. He suffered from tuberculosis and hoped the Australian weather would help his delicate medical condition.
After arriving, Farrer worked as a tutor in Duntroon and later as a surveyor. In 1882, he married Henrietta Nina, the daughter of Leopold Fane de Salis. In 1886, Nina received 97 hectares of land from her father. Farrer established a farm on this land called "Lambrigg," located near the Murrumbidgee River. He initially tried to start a vineyard, but the soil was not suitable. He then turned his scientific focus to wheat cultivation with the goal of producing a high-quality loaf of bread.
Farrer's success had a massive impact on the Australian economy and food supply. In 1900, he finally obtained a satisfactory series of wheat, which he named the Federation strain. This name honored the upcoming Federation of Australia. When the strain was released to farmers in 1903, it changed everything. Over a period of twenty years, the Australian wheat harvest trebled, or tripled, in size. This allowed wheat export to become a world-class enterprise for the nation. 
Farrer died at his home, Lambrigg, on April 16, 1906, following a major heart attack. His legacy is preserved through many different honors in Australia. The Farrer Memorial Trust was established in 1911 to provide scholarships for agricultural studies. In 1936, the trust began awarding a medal for outstanding service to agricultural science. Various statues of Farrer stand in Queanbeyan and at Lambrigg. His name is also used for a suburb, a primary school in Canberra, and a specialist agricultural high school in Tamworth. Even the Australian two-dollar banknote featured his image from 1966 to 1988.
