As a major industrial hub, Wichita is a regional center for culture, media, and trade. The city includes several large universities, museums, and entertainment venues. It is home to the Intrust Bank Arena and Century II. The Wichita metropolitan area has a population of 647,610 people. The city itself had 397,532 residents as of the 2020 census.

The history of the area began long before the modern city existed. Archaeological evidence shows human habitation near the confluence of the Arkansas and Little Arkansas Rivers as early as 3000 BC. In 1541, a Spanish expedition led by Francisco Vázquez de Coronado found the Quivira, or Wichita, people living there. Later, the Wichita people returned to the area in 1863. They had been driven from their land in Indian Territory by Confederate forces during the American Civil War. They established a settlement on the banks of the Little Arkansas River. The Darius Sales Munger House, built in 1868, is the oldest surviving building in the city.

In the 1860s, the site became a trading post on the Chisholm Trail. Jesse Chisholm established a post that helped connect the area to Texas. In 1868, James R. Mead and other investors formed the Wichita Town Company. They named the settlement after the Wichita tribe. The city was formally incorporated on July 21, 1870. Because it was a destination for cattle drives moving north from Texas, it earned the nickname "Cowtown." The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway reached the city in 1872.

A massive economic shift occurred in the early 20th century. In 1914 and 1915, workers discovered oil and natural gas in nearby Butler County. This discovery triggered an economic boom. Refineries and fueling stations were established throughout the city. By the 1920s, Wichita had many operating refineries. The wealth from the oil boom allowed local entrepreneurs to invest in a new industry. This investment helped launch the aircraft manufacturing sector that defines the city today.

The aviation industry began with the construction of the Cessna Comet in 1917.
