Most laptops at that time capped at 720p recording quality. In contrast, smartphones often provided 1080p or 4K quality. A design challenge exists for laptop manufacturers because laptops are often too thin. It is difficult to fit a standard 7mm camera module inside, so many use smaller 2.5mm modules instead.

Today, webcams connect us to a wide variety of digital experiences. We use them for videotelephony to speak with friends through programs like Apple's Messages.
