Online chat is a method of communication over the Internet that allows for the real-time transmission of messages.

There are several ways to categorize how these communications work. One way is by the type of media used. Audio conferencing uses only sound, while video conferencing uses both voice and visual images. Another way to categorize chat is by the number of access points involved. Point-to-point communication connects only two computers end-to-end. In contrast, multi-point communication connects two or more computers simultaneously. This allows for group discussions, often held in digital spaces known as chat rooms.
Chat rooms are specific environments designed for synchronous conferencing. These spaces allow users to share information via text with a group. While instant messaging is usually designed for one-to-one talk, chat rooms allow for many-to-many interaction. Some chat rooms are purely text-based, while others are graphical multi-user environments. In these graphical spaces, users may use an avatar, which is a graphic representation of themselves. These environments can be 2D or 3D, sometimes utilizing virtual reality technology. Some users even participate in text-based interactive fiction known as MUDs.
The history of online chat began with government and academic use. The first chat system was developed in 1971 by Murray Turoff for the U.S. government. This system, called EMISARI, allowed 10 regional offices to link together in a real-time "party line." The first public system was Talkomatic, created in 1973 by Doug Brown and David R. Woolley. Talkomatic was unique because messages appeared on screens character-by-character as they were typed. In 1979, Tom Walker and Fritz Thane created the first system to use the actual command "chat." Later, in 1988, Jarkko Oikarinen created Internet Relay Chat (IRC), which became a major standard.
Chatting has become a vital tool in the field of e-learning. Synchronous conferencing helps deliver digital content in a way that mimics face-to-face teaching. It allows students to connect with teachers and experts regardless of their physical location or time zone. This is especially helpful for students with limited mobility or those who are home-bound. It also supports real-time collaboration and provides immediate feedback. However, researchers have found that chat can sometimes cause distractions or create information asymmetries during meetings.
Successful implementation of digital conferencing in education depends on several critical factors. First, the quality of video and audio is essential, which relies on high bandwidth and processing power. Second, the amount of training time required depends on how familiar the students and instructors are with the technology. Third, instructors must adapt their teaching strategies to use these new methods effectively. Finally, the specific tool chosen must match the educational problem being solved. For example, web conferencing is often more interactive than standard video conferencing.
Today, online chat is integrated into almost every part of digital life. Many popular social media platforms, such as WhatsApp, Discord, and Snapchat, function as modern chat rooms. Chat is also a core feature in many video-conferencing tools used for work and school. From the early days of the EMISARI party line to modern global video calls, the goal remains the same: to connect people through real-time interaction.
