Warsaw has seen hard times. During World War II, much of the city was destroyed. People fought to protect it during the Warsaw Uprising. Today, the city is rebuilt. The Old Town is a special site.

It grew much larger in the late 16th century. This happened when Sigismund III moved his royal court from Kraków to Warsaw. By the 18th century, it became more populous than Gdańsk. The city served as the capital for the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth until 1795. It later became the seat of Napoleon's Duchy of Warsaw.

History has not always been easy for the city. During World War II, Warsaw was bombed and besieged in 1939. Much of the historic city was destroyed during this time. The population faced great hardship during the Ghetto Uprising in 1943 and the Warsaw Uprising in 1944.

In 1300, Bolesław II of Masovia established the modern city. By 1413, it became the capital of the Masovian Duchy. A major shift occurred in the late 16th century. Sigismund III moved the royal court from Kraków to Warsaw. This decision raised the city's prominence significantly. By the 18th century, Warsaw surpassed Gdańsk in population. It remained the capital of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth until 1795.

\n\nThe 19th century brought a period of rapid industrialization. This era caused a massive demographic boom. The population grew by 134 percent between 1850 and 1882. This growth reached 383,000 people during that time. The western borough of Wola changed from farmland to an industrial center. Factories for textiles, glassware, and metalwork appeared there. However, the 20th century brought severe destruction. Warsaw was bombed and besieged at the start of World War II in 1939. The Ghetto Uprising in 1943 and the Warsaw Uprising in 1944 caused massive damage. Much of the historic city was destroyed or systematically razed.
