The West Slavs, or Lechites, built a settlement at the site of the modern Ducal Castle. By the 10th century, the city became part of the emerging Polish state under Mieszko I. Later, the city served as the capital for the Duchy of Pomerania. This duchy was ruled by the local House of Griffin. Over many centuries, the city's control shifted between Poland, the Duchy of Saxony, the Holy Roman Empire, and Denmark.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, new powers arrived in the region. In 1630, the Swedish Empire took control of the city.
