Wang Yangming was a great thinker in China.
Wang had a new way of thinking. He founded the School of the Mind. He believed that people are born with innate knowing. This means we know right from wrong from birth. This knowledge is like a light inside the mind. It is not something we learn from books. It is a feeling we just have.
Wang also taught that knowing and doing are one. He said you cannot truly know something without doing it. To him, knowledge and action are joined together. If you do not act, you do not really know.
He believed the mind gives reason to the world. To keep the mind clear, he practiced sitting still. This is a type of meditation. His ideas spread to Japan too. They helped shape the way samurai lived.
Wang Yangming was a very important thinker in China.
Wang had many different jobs in his life. He was a successful general during several revolts. In 1517 and 1518, he helped stop peasant revolts. Later, in 1519, he faced the Prince of Ning rebellion. This rebellion was led by Zhu Chenhao. Wang used clever tricks to slow the prince down. This gave time for the capital, Nanjing, to get help. He also used a special cannon called a fo-lang-ji. This was a breech loading cannon from the Portuguese. As a governor, he also built schools for people.
Wang's ideas changed how people thought about learning. He founded the School of the Mind. This school was different from the main school of his time. The main school was called the School of Principle. Wang believed in something called innate knowing. He said people are born knowing the difference between good and evil. This knowledge is not from books or logic. It is an intuition that lives inside the mind. He believed the mind is the source of all reason.
One of his biggest ideas was about action. Wang believed that knowledge and action are one thing. He said you cannot truly know something without doing it. Some people thought you could learn first and act later. Wang said that was not true. To him, knowledge and action are unified. If you do not act, you do not really know. To keep the mind clear, he practiced sitting still. This is a type of meditation called tranquil repose. It helps people get rid of selfish desires.
Wang's ideas spread far beyond China. They became very popular in Japan too. His teachings helped shape the samurai ethic. Many Japanese thinkers and leaders followed his school. In Taiwan, a place called Yangmingshan is named after him. There is even a university named National Yang-Ming. In the city of Guiyang, there is a statue and a museum for him. Some people even made a robot version of him. His ideas about thought and action are still studied today.
Wang Yangming was a major figure in Chinese history.
Wang's professional life involved many different roles. He earned important academic degrees in 1492 and 1499. He served in various government departments for many years. However, he was once banished for offending a powerful eunuch. Later, his career resumed when he became the Governor of Jiangxi. As a general, he was known for his strict military discipline. He helped suppress peasant revolts in 1517 and 1518.
In 1519, Wang faced a major challenge. The Prince of Ning, Zhu Chenhao, led a rebellion. This rebellion threatened the southern capital of Nanjing. Wang used deception to slow the prince's progress. This gave time for Nanjing to be reinforced by government forces. The prince was eventually defeated and captured. During this campaign, Wang used a special cannon called a fo-lang-ji. This was a breech loading culverin cannon from the Portuguese.
Wang is most famous for his philosophical ideas. He founded the Lu–Wang school, also called the School of the Mind. This school was a rival to the orthodox School of Principle. The School of Principle followed the teachings of Zhu Xi. It suggested that people must study and gain knowledge to guide their actions. Wang rejected this dualism between knowledge and action. He believed the two were actually unified as one single thing.
One core idea was called innate knowing. Wang argued that every person is born with a sense of morality. People know the difference between good and evil from birth. He believed this knowledge is intuitive rather than purely rational. He taught that the mind is the source of all reason. The mind gives reason to the world rather than the world shaping the mind. To keep the mind clear, he practiced a meditation called tranquil repose. This practice, or "sitting still," helps remove selfish desires.
Wang's philosophy emphasized the integration of knowledge and action. He believed that true knowledge only comes through spontaneous action. He rejected the idea that one could know something without acting on it. To Wang, if you do not act, you do not truly know. Any knowledge that is not put into practice is considered a delusion. This idea was revolutionary for the Neo-Confucian tradition. It changed how scholars viewed their duty to the world.
His influence spread to many other countries and cultures. In Japan, his school is known as Ōyōmei-gaku. His ideas helped shape the Japanese samurai ethic. Some thinkers believe his teachings influenced the development of bushido. Many Japanese reformers and revolutionaries were inspired by him in the nineteenth century. Even the Japanese Admiral Tōgō Heihachirō followed his example.
Today, Wang Yangming remains a highly respected figure. In Taiwan, a national attraction called Yangmingshan is named after him. National Yang-Ming University also carries his name. In Guiyang, there is a museum and a statue dedicated to him. Some cities even have a robot version of Wang. His credo regarding the unity of thought and action is still studied. He is ranked alongside Confucius and Mencius as a great master of Confucianism.
