He is most famous for founding the Yunmen school. This was one of the five major schools of Chan, which is often called Zen in Japan. The school's name comes from the Yunmen monastery located in Shaozhou. This monastery served as the place where Yunmen lived and taught as an abbot. His school was highly influential for many centuries. It eventually flourished into the early Song Dynasty. Later, the school was absorbed by the Linji school. However, his spiritual lineage continues to this day through Chan Master Xuyun, who lived from 1840 to 1959.

Yunmen's life began in the town of Jiaxing near Suzhou. Historians are not entirely certain of his birth year. Some records from the Yunmen monastery suggest he was born in 864 CE. This is based on the fact that he was 86 years old when he died in 949 CE. As a young boy, he became a monk under a master named Zhicheng. He took his formal monastic vows in 883 CE at the age of 20. Seeking deeper enlightenment, he eventually studied under the master Xuefeng Yicun at Mount Xianggu. After several years of intense study, Yunmen achieved enlightenment.

After his teacher Xuefeng Yicun died, Yunmen began to travel extensively. He visited many different monasteries to share his wisdom. Around 911 CE, he joined the monastery of Rumin Chanshi on Mount Lingshu. The two men became close friends. When Rumin died in 918 CE, Yunmen became the head priest of the Lingshu monastery. During this period, China was in the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms era. The South was peaceful and developed, while the North suffered from war. The ruler of the Southern Han kingdom, Liu Yan, met Yunmen during a ceremony. The king was so impressed that he provided patronage and protection. He also confirmed Yunmen's appointment as the abbot of the Lingshu monastery.

As Yunmen's fame grew, he faced a new challenge. Visitors from all over China and Korea began to flock to him. This large crowd became too distracting for his teaching style. In 923 CE, he asked King Liu Yan for help. He requested the construction of a new monastery on Mount Yunmen. The king agreed to this request. In 928 CE, at the age of 64, Yunmen began living and teaching at this new mountain monastery.

This is why he is known by the name Yunmen. Although the king offered him more honors, Yunmen preferred the quiet of his mountain home.

Yunmen was famous for a very direct and forceful teaching style. He often used sudden shouts or strikes with a staff to provoke thought. He was also known for his "One Word Barriers." These were short, sharp, single-word answers to complex questions. For example, he might answer with the word "Guan!", which means a barrier or frontier pass. These answers were intended to be paradoxical and difficult to understand. They eventually helped form the tradition of the koan. A koan is a story or statement used to train the mind. Many of his sayings were later collected in books like the Blue Cliff Record.

His teachings produced a massive impact on the Buddhist tradition. It is recorded that he had approximately 790 disciples. A large number of these followers achieved enlightenment. The Yunmen school remained a major force for about 300 years. Even after the school was absorbed by the Linji school, his ideas remained vital. His famous phrase, "Nichinichi kore kōnichi," translates to "Every day is a good day." This simple idea became a cornerstone for later Zen teachers. It remains a useful concept in mindfulness and spiritual practice today.

Today, the legacy of Yunmen Wenyan reaches far beyond ancient China. His stories and koans have influenced many different fields. The writer Jack Kerouac included his ideas in the book The Dharma Bums. The composer John Cage used his words in his musical Song Books. Even science fiction authors have drawn inspiration from him. In the Hyperion Cantos, a character named Ummon uses koans to reveal secrets. These connections show how his unique way of thinking continues to spark wonder and curiosity in the modern world.
