These animals have many special parts. They have four or five toes on each foot. Their claws can pull in halfway. Their tongues are rough with sharp prickles. Most species also have a bone in their penis called a baculum.

Viverrids look different from cats. They have longer noses. They also have shorter limbs. Their teeth are not as strong for shearing meat as cat teeth are. A man named John Edward Gray first described them in 1821. Scientists study their DNA to learn how they are related. This helps them group animals together. For example, the fossa was once part of this group. Now, DNA shows it belongs in a different family. The African palm civet also has its own family. It looks like a viverrid but is not one.

This helped scientists organize the many different kinds of viverrids.

There are 14 genera and 33 species in this family.

Some animals belong to the subfamily Genettinae, which are called genets or oyans. Others belong to Viverrinae, which are called civets. There are also palm civets in the Paradoxurinae and Hemigalinae groups.

Scientists use DNA to see how they are related. For example, the Malagasy fossa was once part of this family. Edward Turner Bennett described it in 1833. Now, DNA shows the fossa belongs to a different group called Eupleridae.

Physically, viverrids have several unique traits that distinguish them from true cats. They possess a longer muzzle and a tuft of facial vibrissae, which are whiskers, between the lower jaw bones. Their limbs are shorter than those of cats. On their feet, they have four or five toes, and their hind feet have five toes with the first digit present. Their claws are described as half-retractile.

Their mouths also show differences. Viverrids have six incisors in each jaw. Their molars include two tubercular grinders in the upper jaw and one in the lower jaw. Their tongues are rough and covered in sharp prickles. Most species also possess a baculum, which is a penis bone.

Scientists classify these animals into several different subfamilies. The subfamily Genettinae includes animals known as genets and oyans. The subfamily Viverrinae contains the animals commonly called civets.

These subfamilies are often organized based on specific physical structures. For example, researchers look at the structure of the feet. They also examine specialized scent glands derived from the skin. These glands are often located near the external generative organs.

The history of studying Viverridae began in the early 19th century. John Edward Gray first named and described the family in 1821. At that time, he defined the family using the genera Viverra, Genetta, Herpestes, and Suricata. Later, Reginald Innes Pocock redefined the family to include many more highly diversified genera. He organized them into subfamilies based on scent glands and foot structure. In 1833, Edward Turner Bennett described the Malagasy fossa and placed it within Viverridae. However, scientific understanding of these animals has changed over time through new technology.

Modern science uses DNA analysis to correct older classifications. While the fossa was once considered a viverrid, molecular and morphological analysis suggests it belongs to the Eupleridae family.

Similarly, the African palm civet looks like a viverrid but is genetically distinct. It belongs to its own monotypic family called Nandiniidae. DNA studies have also helped clarify relationships between other species. A study of 29 carnivoran species used DNA to confirm certain connections. This analysis showed that the African linsang Poiana is the sister group to the genus Genetta.

Some species within the family show very specific evolutionary paths. For instance, the genus Prionodon is considered the sister group to the Felidae family. Because of this close relationship, some scientists have proposed placing the Asiatic linsangs into their own family, Prionodontidae.

This shows how closely related these animals are to the cats we see today. The study of these lineages helps scientists map the entire history of the Feliformia group. It allows us to see how different traits, like teeth or skull shapes, evolved over millions of years.

Understanding Viverridae provides a window into the broader system of mammalian evolution. By studying their primitive traits, scientists can understand the ancestors of more specialized predators. The dental formula of a viverrid is a key piece of evidence. Their typical formula is I 6/3, C 1/1, P 3/2, M 3/3, though the number of teeth can sometimes be reduced. Their carnassial teeth, which are used for shearing flesh, are less developed than those in other feliforms. This lack of specialization is a major reason why they are considered a primitive family. Every detail, from the position of the postpalatine foramina in the skull to the texture of the tongue, helps tell the story of their place in the natural world.
