One massive genus, Pachycrocuta, was a mega-scavenger. It was strong enough to splinter the bones of elephants. Eventually, Pachycrocuta was replaced by smaller species like Crocuta and Hyena. This change may have been linked to the Mid-Pleistocene transition. These bone-crushing specialists filled the role of cleaning up large animal carcasses. 
There are only four species of hyena alive today. The spotted hyena, or Crocuta crocuta, is a highly social pack hunter. It diverged from other hyenas about 10 million years ago. Spotted hyenas developed sharp carnassial teeth to help them hunt. This allowed them to hunt live prey instead of just scavenging. The other three species are the striped hyena, the brown hyena, and the aardwolf. 
Modern science uses genetics to understand how these animals changed. Researchers have found that all four living species have an expanded olfactory receptor gene family. This helps them with their specialized feeding habits. The spotted, striped, and brown hyenas also have expanded immune-related genes. This likely helps them stay healthy while scavenging. In aardwolves, specific genes help them handle toxins. This allows them to eat termites that produce chemical defenses. These genetic changes show how hyenas have perfectly adapted to their specific environments.
