However, their numbers declined 5 to 7 million years ago. This was caused by climate change and the arrival of canids. Most dog-like hyenas died out by 1.5 million years ago. One exception was Chasmaporthetes ossifragus, which crossed into North America. It survived by becoming a fast sprinter, much like a cheetah.

The bone-crushing hyenas took a different path. They became the dominant scavengers of Eurasia and Africa. Between 10 and 14 million years ago, they began to rise as the dog-like group declined. One massive genus, Pachycrocuta, was a mega-scavenger. It was strong enough to splinter the bones of elephants. Eventually, Pachycrocuta was replaced by smaller species like Crocuta and Hyena. This change may have been linked to the Mid-Pleistocene transition. These bone-crushing specialists filled the role of cleaning up large animal carcasses.

There are only four species of hyena alive today. The spotted hyena, or Crocuta crocuta, is a highly social pack hunter. It diverged from other hyenas about 10 million years ago.
