He likely worked in various locations, including North Africa, Hispania, and Gaul. He may have even served alongside the chief engineer of Julius Caesar. His experience with military installations provided a deep understanding of structural mechanics and engineering.

While much of his life remains a mystery, we know he worked on at least one specific building. He supervised the construction of a basilica at Fanum Fortunae, which is known today as Fano, Italy. This basilica was completed in 19 BC. Although the building had disappeared for centuries, its foundations were finally unearthed in Piazza Andrea Costa in January 2026. This discovery helps historians visualize the actual work he performed. It proves that his theoretical writings were backed by real-world construction experience.

History shows that Vitruvius's influence grew significantly long after his death. His work was widely copied during the Middle Ages and was "rediscovered" in 1414 by the humanist Poggio Bracciolini.

The first Latin printed edition appeared in Rome in 1486. Following this, translations were made into Italian, French, English, German, and Spanish. The first illustrated edition was published in Venice in 1511 by Fra Giovanni Giocondo. These publications allowed his ancient wisdom to reach a massive new audience across Europe.
