Within this height, different body parts follow specific ratios. For example, the head is about 1/8 of the total height. The face is about 1/10 of the total height. 
During the medieval period, proportion took on a spiritual meaning. Builders used it to reflect divine harmony and cosmic order. This influenced Romanesque and Gothic architecture. They relied on simple geometrical figures like the square, circle, and equilateral triangle. These shapes were seen as symbols of divine perfection. The square helped determine the modular unit of the nave and choir. The circle represented eternity and the heavens. 
Medieval builders used specific techniques called *Ad Quadratum* and *Ad Triangulum*. Both techniques begin with the circle. In *Ad Quadratum*, a square is embedded within the circle. Each corner of the square touches the circumference. To create an octagon, the builder rotates the square 45 degrees. This square can then be divided into smaller squares. *Ad Triangulum* starts with an equilateral triangle. This triangle is rotated 180 degrees about its centroid to produce a hexagon. 
In the 20th century, architectural proportion underwent a major shift. It moved away from classical harmonic systems. Instead, it was shaped by industrial production and structural technology. Early modernists used grids and modular planning. New materials like steel and reinforced concrete introduced regular structural spans. These spans became new proportional units. At the Bauhaus, Walter Gropius used repetitive windows and functional room sizes as frameworks. Some architects, like Louis Kahn, organized buildings through "served" and "servant" spaces. Others, like Alvar Aalto, used irregular proportions shaped by movement and material.
Some mid-century architects brought human-based systems back into fashion. Le Corbusier developed the Modulor in 1948. This system combined anthropometry with the Golden Ratio. He used a man with a raised arm as a scalable module. He set the human height at 1.83 metres.
