Between 1924 and 1927, he worked as a military adviser in China. He used the name Galen during this time. This was the name of his wife, Galina. He helped plan the Northern Expedition to unify China. He even taught military skills to leaders like Lin Biao.

Blyukher spent a lot of time leading the Far Eastern Military District. He was based in a place called Khabarovsk. This area was very important because Japan was growing stronger nearby. To protect his identity, he used the name Galen, which was the name of his wife, Galina. He was responsible for planning the Northern Expedition to unify China. During this period, he instructed several important figures, including Lin Biao. After his time in China, he returned to the Soviet Union to hold high-level commands.

In the Russo-Chinese Chinese Eastern Railroad War of 1929–30, he led a successful campaign against Chinese warlord forces. This victory led to him receiving the Order of the Red Star in 1930. His successes earned him the popular nickname "the Red Napoleon." In 1935, he reached the highest rank of Marshal of the Soviet Union.

In 1938, Blyukher was caught in the military purges led by Joseph Stalin. These purges involved the arrest and removal of many high-ranking officials. Blyukher was arrested on October 22, 1938, under accusations of spying for Japan. This arrest occurred after a high-ranking official named Genrikh Lyushkov defected to Japan. While in custody, Blyukher was subjected to severe interrogation by men under Lavrentiy Beria. An officer named Lev Shvartzman was identified as the person who beat him.

Blyukher died from his injuries on November 9, 1938, after 18 days of interrogation. His body was cremated on the same day he died. For many years, the official story was that he had been executed for spying. However, a 1956 investigation revealed the truth about the violence he faced. The Soviet government eventually rehabilitated Blyukher in 1956, acknowledging his innocence.

Today, he remains a well-known historical figure in Russia through books and films.
