To protect itself, the vampire squid uses bioluminescence, which is the production of light by living organisms. It is covered in light-producing organs called photophores. These organs can create bright flashes that last from a fraction of a second to several minutes. If a predator attacks, the squid can perform a "pumpkin" or "pineapple" posture. It curls its arms inward to look larger and more intimidating. It can also eject a sticky cloud of glowing blue mucus. This creates a "burglar alarm effect," making the predator visible to even larger hunters. 
History shows how much we have learned about this species through exploration. The vampire squid was first discovered during the Valdivia Expedition from 1898 to 1899. This expedition was led by the German zoologist Carl Chun. Chun wanted to prove that life existed in the deep sea, challenging the "Abyssus theory" which suggested the deep was lifeless. In 1903, Chun originally described the creature as an octopus. Later, scientists realized it belonged to its own unique order, Vampyromorphida. 
Feeding habits for the vampire squid are quite specialized. It uses its two sensory filaments to collect detritus, such as remains of gelatinous zooplankton and crustacean parts. It even uses a unique luring method by agitating bioluminescent protists to attract prey. While it is mostly a sedentary feeder, researchers have found fish bones and scales in the stomachs of mature adults. This suggests they can also be opportunistic hunters of larger prey. 
Understanding the vampire squid helps scientists study how life adapts to extreme environments. Its relationship to other animals is a subject of ongoing research. While it shares eight webbed arms with cirrate octopods, it differs in how its suckers and cirri are arranged. Genetic studies show that the Vampyromorphida were the first group of Octopodiformes to diverge evolutionarily. This makes the vampire squid a vital link in understanding the history and evolution of all cephalopods.
