Modern cephalopods are divided into two main subclasses. The first is Coleoidea, which includes octopuses, squids, and cuttlefish. In this group, the molluscan shell has been lost or moved inside the body. The second subclass is Nautiloidea, represented by the Nautilus and Allonautilus. These animals still maintain an external shell.

While Coleoidea are highly mobile, the Nautiloidea represent a more ancient body plan. Both groups share the common trait of bilateral body symmetry.

Cephalopods possess the most complex nervous systems of all invertebrates. They have large brains relative to their body size. Their brain-to-body-mass ratio is comparable to that of endothermic and ectothermic vertebrates.

This intelligence allows for advanced behaviors. For example, captive octopuses have been observed climbing out of aquaria to find food in other tanks. Their brains are protected by a cartilaginous cranium. Scientists also study their giant nerve fibers in neurophysiology because they are easy to observe.

Vision is a primary sense for most cephalopods. Their eyes are highly advanced and perform similarly to shark eyes.

Most cephalopods are considered color blind because they lack multiple photoreceptor types. They use vision to detect predators, find prey, and communicate. The Nautilus is an exception, as it lacks a solid lens and uses a simple "pinhole" eye structure. It relies more on olfaction, or smell, to find mates and food.

Color change is one of the most striking cephalopod abilities. They use specialized pigment cells called chromatophores to change patterns in milliseconds.

These cells contain an elastic sac, known as a cytoelastic sacculus, which holds pigment. By expanding or contracting these sacs, the animal changes its skin's opacity and color. To achieve colors beyond red, yellow, and brown, they use iridophores. These are layered protein cells that reflect light to create different hues.

While soft bodies do not fossilize easily, scientists have described an estimated 11,000 extinct taxa. Today, about 800 living species have been identified. They inhabit all the world's oceans, from the sea surface to the deep abyssal plains.

Size and distribution vary greatly across the class. The smallest species, Idiosepius thailandicus, is only 10 mm long. In contrast, the colossal squid is a massive invertebrate weighing 700 kilograms.

They cannot survive in fresh water, though the squid Lolliguncula brevis can tolerate brackish water. Diversity is highest near the equator, with roughly 40 species found at 11°N. Near the poles, such as at 60°N, diversity drops to about 5 species.
