The entire system occupied more than 35.5 square meters of floor space. It also consumed 125 kilowatts of power and ran on a 2.25 MHz clock.

The development of the UNIVAC involved several distinct stages and technical shifts. First, the designers created the C-1 instruction code in April 1947. This was the earliest document for programming a commercial electronic digital computer. Later, in 1949, developer Betty Holberton created the C-10 instruction code. This was the first software that allowed operators to use keyboard commands instead of manual dials and switches.

Additionally, John Mauchly conceived Short Code, the first high-level programming language, which was tested on the UNIVAC I in 1950.

The history of the UNIVAC is tied to the innovators J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly. They had previously invented the ENIAC computer at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1946, they left the university to found the Electronic Control Company in Philadelphia. This later became the Eckert-Mauchly Computer Corporation (EMCC). The project faced financial struggles and leadership changes. After the death of investor Harry Straus in 1949, the company was acquired by Remington Rand in February 1950. This acquisition provided the funds necessary to finish construction by December 1950.

The UNIVAC I had a significant impact on public perception through a famous election prediction. In 1952, the company partnered with CBS to predict the U.S. presidential election results on live television. The machine predicted a landslide victory for Dwight D. Eisenhower. It estimated he would win the Electoral College 438–93 with 32,915,949 votes. This prediction was much bolder than the Gallup Poll, which expected a close contest. The machine was incredibly accurate, with a margin of error of only 3.5% for the popular vote. It was within just four votes of the actual Electoral College total. This event helped create greater public awareness of computing technology.

Many different organizations utilized the UNIVAC I for various specialized tasks. The first machine was accepted by the United States Census Bureau on March 31, 1951.

Other early customers included the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Army Map Service, and the Atomic Energy Commission. Private companies like General Electric, U.S. Steel, and Prudential Insurance also used the systems. While the original price was $159,000, the cost eventually rose to between $1,250,000 and $1,500,000. A total of 46 systems were eventually built and delivered to customers worldwide.

The UNIVAC I connects to the broader evolution of modern data processing. It bridged the gap between scientific calculators and the business computers we use today. By introducing magnetic tape and improved memory, it paved the way for faster data handling. Even as technology advanced, some systems remained in service for a long time. The Census Bureau used its systems for up to 12 years. One insurance company used its machine for over 13 years. These machines laid the groundwork for the computerized predictions and digital business tools used in the modern world.
