This is a big sea. It is near Italy. Many islands are in the water.

This sea is near Italy.
Some islands are very big. Others are small.
Deep down, the sea has volcanoes. These volcanoes are under the water.
There is a deep canyon too. Rare fish and corals live there.
Many ships use the ports. People visit the beautiful coast. It is a busy place.
The Tyrrhenian Sea is part of the Mediterranean Sea. It sits near the west coast of Italy.
Many islands sit in this sea. Big islands include Corsica, Sardinia, and Sicily. There are also smaller islands like Capri and Ischia.
The sea is very deep. It sits near where two giant pieces of Earth meet. These are called plates. Because of this, there are active volcanoes under the water. One is called Mount Marsili.
There is also a deep place called the Caprera Canyon. It is 1,000 metres deep. Many rare fish and corals live there.
Many people use ports to move goods. Naples and Palermo are main ports. Even Rome uses a port. It is at a place called Civitavecchia. This is a busy part of the world.
The Tyrrhenian Sea is a large part of the Mediterranean Sea. It sits right off the western coast of Italy.

This sea was formed in a special way. Scientists call it a back-arc basin. It formed when a piece of the Earth's crust moved. This happened during a time called the Neogene. As this piece moved, it created two flat areas. These are called the Vavilov plain and the Marsili plain. An undersea ridge called the Issel Bridge separates them.
Deep under the water, things are very active. The sea sits near where the African and Eurasian plates meet. This meeting of plates creates mountain chains and volcanoes. One famous underwater volcano is called Mount Marsili. There is also a deep place called the Caprera Canyon. It sits 1,000 metres below the surface.
History tells us about the people who lived nearby. A Greek writer named Hesiod wrote about them long ago. He lived in the 8th century BC. He said the Etruscans lived in central Italy. They lived near the Latins. The Etruscans called this water the "Sea of the Etruscans."
Nature in the sea is beautiful but faces hard jobs. Many fish and corals in the canyon are at risk. This is because of pollution from travel. Another problem is called bottom trawling. This is a type of fishing that can hurt the ocean floor.
The Tyrrhenian Sea is a large body of water located in the Mediterranean Sea. It sits off the western coast of Italy. The sea is named after the Tyrrhenian people. These people are also known as the Etruscans. The Etruscans lived in central Italy near the Latins. A Greek writer named Hesiod mentioned them in the 8th century BC. He recorded that they lived in areas like modern Tuscany and Campania. The Etruscans actually called this water the "Sea of the Etruscans."
Geography defines the borders of this sea through several landmasses and islands. To the west, the islands of Corsica and Sardinia form a boundary. The Italian Peninsula lies to the north and east. This includes regions such as Tuscany, Lazio, Campania, Basilicata, and Calabria. The island of Sicily marks the southern edge. Many smaller islands are also found here. These include Capri, Elba, Ischia, and Ustica. The Aeolian Islands are also located in the southern part of the sea.
The sea is a back-arc basin. This means it formed through a specific geological process. During the Neogene period, a piece of the Earth's crust called the Calabrian slab rolled back toward the southeast. This movement caused the trench to retreat at different speeds. Fast and slow retreat episodes created two distinct areas. These are the Vavilov basin and the Marsili basin. An undersea ridge called the Issel Bridge separates these two plains. This ridge is named after Arturo Issel.
Geological activity is very high in the Tyrrhenian Sea. The sea sits near the meeting point of the African and Eurasian Plates. This interaction creates mountain chains and active volcanoes. Trench retreat causes the overriding plate to extend. This extension allows the mantle to rise below the surface. The rising mantle partially melts to create magma. This process also involves fluids released from the sinking slab. As a result, the sea contains underwater volcanoes like Mount Marsili. The active volcano Mount Stromboli also exists in this region.
Deep beneath the waves lies the Caprera Canyon. This canyon is located at a depth of 1,000 metres. The One Ocean Foundation explored this specific area. They discovered colonies of rare sponges and corals. They also found many species of fish. However, much of this biology is currently at risk. As of November 17, 2025, the canyon faces several threats. Travel-based pollution is increasing in the area. Another threat is bottom trawling, which is a method of fishing. The One Ocean Foundation is working to find new protections for this site.
The Tyrrhenian Sea has several exits that connect it to other waters. To the north, the Corsica Channel leads to the Ligurian Sea. The Strait of Bonifacio connects it to the Mediterranean Sea. There is also an unnamed exit between Sardinia and Sicily. Finally, the Strait of Messina connects the sea to the Ionian Sea. These paths allow water and life to move between different parts of the Mediterranean. Many important Italian ports serve this sea. These include Naples, Palermo, and Civitavecchia. Civitavecchia is often called the port of Rome, even though Rome itself has no port.
Human history and myth are also tied to these waters. In Greek mythology, the cliffs above the sea were home to the winds. These winds were kept by the god Aeolus. There are four main winds mentioned in these traditions. The Mistral comes from the Rhône valley. The Libeccio comes from the southwest. The Sirocco and the Ostro come from the south. These winds have shaped how people travel across the sea for centuries. From ancient Etruscans to modern sailors, the Tyrrhenian Sea remains a central part of the region.
