There are many different species within this group. One species is T. nepaeolicus, found near the Solomon River.

The formal naming of Tylosaurus was shaped by the "Bone Wars." This was a famous rivalry between paleontologists Edward Drinker Cope and Othniel Charles Marsh.

In 1869, Cope described a fragmentary skull from the Niobrara Formation in Kansas. He originally named it Macrosaurus proriger. Later, Marsh argued for a different genus called Rhinosaurus. Cope disagreed and suggested the name Rhamphosaurus, but that name was already taken. Eventually, the name Tylosaurus became the standard. Joseph Leidy first formally transferred the species to this genus in 1873.

Scientists have identified many different species within the Tylosaurus genus. One example is T. nepaeolicus, which was found near the Solomon River.

Another species, T. bernardi, was discovered in a phosphate quarry in Belgium. For a long time, some fossils were classified as Hainosaurus, but they were later moved to Tylosaurus. In Sweden, researchers found teeth belonging to T. ivoensis.
