Sumatran tigers inhabit a variety of environments across the island. They range from sea-level coastal lowland forests to high mountain forests. 
Population numbers for these tigers have changed significantly over the last few decades. In 1978, surveys estimated there were 1,000 individuals remaining. By 1992, that number had dropped to an estimated 400 to 500 tigers. In 2011, the Kerinci Seblat National Park held a significant population of 165 to 190 tigers. This park showed a very high tiger occupancy rate of 83%. However, the total population for all of Sumatra was estimated at only 618 individuals in 2017. These figures highlight the ongoing struggle for the subspecies to maintain stable numbers.
Several major threats jeopardize the continued existence of the Sumatran tiger. Habitat loss is a primary driver, often caused by the expansion of acacia and oil palm plantations. This loss of forest reduces the available space for tigers to hunt and live. Additionally, the depletion of their prey base makes survival more difficult. Tigers rely on various species, including the Malayan tapir, banded pig, and various deer species. Illegal trade and poaching also pose severe risks to the population. Poachers use wire snares to target tigers, and tigers are sometimes accidentally caught in traps meant for other animals.
Conservation efforts have been launched to address these complex challenges. The Sumatran Tiger Project began in 1995 near Way Kambas National Park to study tiger life history and ensure long-term viability. Other international collaborations, such as those involving the Australia Zoo, focus on rehabilitation and reintroduction. In Indonesia, there is increasing political momentum to protect biodiversity and reduce deforestation. Between 2005 and 2015, approximately US$210 million was invested in tiger law enforcement and forest ranger patrols. These programs aim to reduce human-tiger conflict and protect the vital forest blocks these predators require.
