Life on the plateau involves many different groups of people. The Tibetans call it their homeland.

History shows that Tibet has had many powerful leaders. In the 7th century, the Yarlung dynasty began to grow.
In the early 1900s, many changes happened in the region. Following the Xinhai Revolution in 1912, Qing soldiers left Tibet.
Today, Tibet is a place that many people visit.

Tibet is a massive, high-altitude region located in western East Asia.

The geography of the plateau creates a unique environment. Because it is so high, the climate and landscape are distinct. The region is home to many different ethnic groups. Tibetans consider this plateau their homeland. Other groups living there include Mongols, the Lhoba, Monpa, Qiang, and Sherpa. Since the 20th century, Han and Hui peoples have also resided there.

The Tibetan language belongs to the Tibeto-Burman family. This is part of the larger Sino-Tibetan language family. Some linguists suggest Tibetan and Burmese are distant cousins of Chinese. The language has many regional dialects. These dialects are often not mutually intelligible. For example, people in Central Tibet, Kham, and Amdo speak different versions. However, the written language remains consistent. It is based on Classical Tibetan. The script is derived from the ancient Indian Brāhmī script.
History in the region began thousands of years ago. Humans inhabited the plateau at least 21,000 years ago. Around 3,000 years ago, Neolithic immigrants from northern China arrived. The earliest historical texts mention the Zhang Zhung culture. This culture migrated from the Amdo region into western Tibet. Zhang Zhung was also the original home of the Bön religion. In the 7th century, the Yarlung dynasty began to expand. King Songtsen Gampo was a major leader during this time.

The Tibetan Empire reached its peak in the 9th century. At this time, it stretched from the Tarim Basin to Bengal. It also reached as far as Yunnan in the southeast. However, the empire later dissolved into many smaller groups. Between the 13th and 18th centuries, central Tibet often fell under Mongol or Chinese patronage. The Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism rose to prominence during this era. Later, the Qing dynasty established rule after expelling Mongol forces. They incorporated many areas into provinces like Sichuan.
Political changes occurred rapidly in the early 20th century. Following the Xinhai Revolution in 1912, Qing soldiers left Tibet. The 13th Dalai Lama declared independence in 1913. However, no foreign power or the Chinese government recognized this. In 1951, China annexed the area after the Battle of Chamdo. This happened after the 14th Dalai Lama ratified the Seventeen Point Agreement. The Tibetan government was later abolished after the 1959 uprising. Today, China governs the area as the Xizang Autonomous Region. It also manages autonomous prefectures in Gansu, Sichuan, Qinghai, and Yunnan.
Modern Tibet has a large tourism industry. The service sector is now the largest part of the local economy. In 2020, it accounted for 50.1% of the local GDP.

Connecting these elements shows how geography shapes history. The high altitude and isolated plateau allowed for a unique culture to develop. The Tibetan language and religion provided a shared identity. However, the strategic location also led to many conflicts. The empire's reach and its eventual dissolution changed the region's structure. Today, the mix of ancient tradition and modern tourism defines Tibet. It remains a vital part of the East Asian landscape.
