Many of his clocks still work today. Some are even in a palace. He was a master of his craft.

In 1676, the Royal Observatory was established, leading to a very special commission. King Charles II selected Tompion to create two identical clocks based on an idea from Robert Hooke. These clocks used a very long pendulum that swung in a very small arc. They were driven by a deadbeat escapement, which is a mechanism designed by Richard Towneley. These clocks were so efficient that they only needed to be wound once a year. 
Tompion's workshop was a massive operation for its time. Throughout his career, his workshop produced approximately 5,500 watches and 650 clocks. He employed many highly skilled craftsmen, including workers with French and Dutch Huguenot origins. These specialists, such as Daniel and Nicholas Delander, helped execute the high-quality decorative arts Tompion required.
Tompion was an active and respected member of the Clockmakers' Company of London. He joined the company in 1671 and achieved the rank of master in 1704. During his time, he worked alongside other famous names like Charles Gretton and Daniel Quare. His business life also included various partnerships. He worked with Edward Banger starting in 1701. Later, around 1711, he entered a partnership with his famous pupil, George Graham. Some clocks from this era feature signatures that overlap or appear on separate plates.
George Graham played a major role in carrying on Tompion's legacy. After Tompion died on November 20, 1713, Graham continued to develop scientific instruments, clocks, and watches. He also maintained the serial numbering system that Tompion had established. Both men are honored in Westminster Abbey, where Tompion was buried. Graham was later buried alongside him in 1751.
Many of Tompion's creations are still functional hundreds of years later. For example, two of his one-year clocks are still kept in Buckingham Palace. His watches are noted for their robust construction, which allows them to continue working today.
