Boyle was born in 1627 at Lismore Castle in Ireland. His father was the 1st Earl of Cork. Robert grew up with many brothers and sisters. He went to Eton College in England when he was eight years old. Later, he traveled to Italy in 1641. While in Florence, he studied the work of the famous star-gazer, Galileo Galilei.

He worked with an assistant named Robert Hooke to improve an earlier design. The original pump by Otto von Guericke was very difficult to use. It required two strong men to operate it for many hours. It also used a large glass globe that was hard to open. Boyle and Hooke created the "Pneumatical Engine" in 1659. This machine was small enough to sit on a desktop. It featured a glass receiver that could be opened to insert objects. Scientists could then test how air pressure affected candles, bells, or even small animals.

Boyle's early life shaped his many interests. He was born in 1627 at Lismore Castle in County Waterford, Ireland. He was the seventh son of the 1st Earl of Cork. His father, Richard Boyle, had amassed great wealth and land. Robert received private tutoring in Latin, Greek, and French. At age eight, he attended Eton College in England. In 1641, he traveled to Italy. While in Florence, he studied the work of the famous astronomer Galileo Galilei. These experiences provided him with a broad education in many different fields.

In the mid-1600s, Boyle became part of a group called the "Invisible College."

This group of enquirers met in London and Oxford. They wanted to study the "new philosophy" of science. In 1663, this group became the Royal Society of London. Boyle was a member of its council and was later elected president. However, he declined the presidency due to his religious scruples regarding oaths. He spent much of his later life in London.
