He was born on August 9, 1757, in a rural part of Dumfriesshire. His father was a shepherd who died shortly after Thomas was born. Because of this, Thomas grew up in a very poor family. At age 14, he began an apprenticeship as a stonemason. This early training helped him learn how to work with hard materials. He later moved to London and Portsmouth to grow his skills. Eventually, he became a leader in building the paths that connect our world.

One way Telford changed the world was through his use of iron.

He was a pioneer in using cast iron for huge structures. For the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, he used iron plates to make troughs for water. He had to invent new ways to keep these plates together. He used a mixture of boiling sugar and lead as a sealant. This helped stop the water from leaking through the iron connections. He also built the Longdon-on-Tern Aqueduct using similar methods.

He held this important post for 14 years until he died in 1834. His friend Robert Southey even gave him a special nickname. He was called the "Colossus of Roads" because he built so many highways.

He was born on August 9, 1757, in the rural parish of Westerkirk. His father, John Telford, was a shepherd who died shortly after Thomas was born. Consequently, Thomas was raised in poverty by his mother, Janet Jackson. At age 14, he began an apprenticeship as a stonemason. This early training provided a foundation in working with stone. He later worked in Edinburgh and moved to London in 1782. There, he helped build additions to Somerset House. He eventually moved to the Portsmouth dockyard to expand his skills. Through the help of a patron, he became the Surveyor of Public Works in Shropshire in 1787.

Telford was a pioneer in using cast iron for large-scale engineering.

He often tested his materials thoroughly before beginning construction. This was a vital step in ensuring the safety of his designs. At the Buildwas bridge, he created his first iron bridge. He noticed that the Ironbridge designed by Abraham Darby was over-designed and had poorly cast parts. In contrast, Telford's bridge had a wider span but weighed only half as much. He also designed the Longdon-on-Tern Aqueduct.

This structure was larger than the first cast-iron aqueduct in the United Kingdom. His work with iron required him to invent new construction techniques. For example, he used a sealant made of boiling sugar and lead to join iron plates.

One of his most famous works is the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.

This structure was built to carry the Ellesmere Canal over the River Dee. The aqueduct consists of nineteen arches. It uses troughs made from cast-iron plates that are fixed into masonry. The height of the structure is quite significant above the valley floor. Because of its engineering importance, it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009. Telford managed the detailed execution of this project under the oversight of William Jessop. This canal was intended to link ironworks and collieries to the River Mersey. However, the Ellesmere Canal remained uncompleted in 1805 due to a lack of revenue.

Telford's reputation led to a massive 20-year project in the Scottish Highlands. He devised a master plan in 1801 to improve communications in that region. This plan included the construction of the Caledonian Canal along the Great Glen. He also redesigned sections of the Crinan Canal. His work involved building over a thousand new bridges, such as the Craigellachie Bridge. He also improved many harbours, including those at Aberdeen, Dundee, and Wick. Additionally, he designed 32 new churches for communities that lacked them. These were known as Parliamentary Churches because of an Act of Parliament in 1823. He used a simple T-shaped plan for these churches to keep costs low.

In the field of road building, Telford was known as the "Colossus of Roads."

This nickname was given to him by his friend, the poet Robert Southey. He improved the methods used for making macadam roads. He did this by carefully selecting stones based on their thickness. He also considered the alignment of the road and its slopes. He worked on the London to Holyhead road, which involved building highways from scratch in some areas. One of his most formidable challenges was the Menai Strait.

He overcame this by building the Menai Suspension Bridge between 1819 and 1826. At the time, it was the longest suspension bridge in existence.

He designed the Galton Bridge, which held the record for the longest single span in the world in 1829. He also worked on the St Katharine Docks in London. In Sweden, his plans for the Göta Canal were adopted, and he traveled there to oversee excavations in 1810. He even helped improve the Howth Road in Dublin to connect the city to the new harbour. His influence was so great that he was elected the first president of the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1820. He held this prestigious position for 14 years until his death in 1834.

The legacy of Thomas Telford is visible in many parts of the world today. The town of Telford in Shropshire was named in his honor.
