One of his first major technical achievements involved mine safety. In 1815, Stephenson began experimenting with a safety lamp to prevent mine explosions. These explosions were often caused by naked flames hitting gases in the mines. He used trial and error to create a design with a perforated plate. This plate contained a glass cylinder and tiny holes for air. These holes were small enough that the flames could not pass through them.

This invention was known as the "Geordie Lamp." While scientist Humphry Davy created a similar lamp using a gauze screen, Stephenson's lamp was thought to be safer in gaseous atmospheres. A committee later found that Stephenson had an equal claim to the invention.

Stephenson also made vital advancements in locomotive technology. In 1814, he designed his first locomotive, named Blücher. This engine was a successful flanged-wheel adhesion locomotive. This means its traction relied on the contact between its flanged wheels and the rail.

The Blücher could haul 30 tons of coal up a hill. As engines became heavier, they began to break primitive wooden or cast-iron rails. To solve this, Stephenson experimented with a steam spring to cushion the weight. He eventually used the practice of distributing weight by using multiple wheels or bogies.
