This setup is very beneficial for safety. If a train were to derail, the articulated carriages are more likely to stay upright and in line with the track. This prevents the cars from splitting apart or jackknifing.

Safety at high speeds requires advanced electronic systems. Because TGV trains travel so fast, drivers cannot always see traditional track-side signals. To solve this, engineers developed transmission voie-machine (TVM) cab-signalling technology. This system communicates directly with the driver's cab. If a train engages its emergency brakes, the TVM system can request all following trains to reduce speed within seconds. If the driver does not react to a signal within a set time, the system overrides the controls. It automatically reduces the train's speed to ensure safety. This reliable mechanism allows TGVs to depart from the same line as often as every three minutes.

The history of the TGV began with a shift in technological goals. In 1967, French officials began exploring high-speed ideas after Japan's Shinkansen project began. Initially, the project focused on gas turbines for power. These were chosen because they were small and had a good power-to-weight ratio. The first prototype, TGV 001, used this gas-turbine technology.
