Some groups say a train is high-speed if it goes at least 250 km/h. Others use different rules. For example, the European Union says trains must reach 200 km/h. High-speed rail is a very efficient way to move people between big cities.

This means high-speed rail does not always provide an economic advantage over standard speed rail. Despite the cost, the benefits of speed and efficiency are significant. In some regions, like Russia and Uzbekistan, developers use the Russian gauge instead of the standard gauge. Most other countries with different legacy gauges, such as Japan and Spain, choose to build new high-speed lines using the standard gauge instead.
High-speed rail is a vital part of modern global transportation. It allows for rapid movement across borders in continental Europe and Asia. As technology improves, systems like maglev continue to push the limits of speed.
