The mountain grew through many steps over a long time. First, shield volcanoes formed the main part of Tenerife. These volcanoes had fluid lava that spread out wide.

Later, a volcano called Las Cañadas began to form. About 200,000 years ago, a giant landslide swept away its peak. This left a large, horseshoe-shaped hole called a caldera.

The formation of Teide involves a complex geological history. The island of Tenerife began forming nearly 12 million years ago. It started with shield volcanoes, which are wide mountains built from fluid basaltic lava.

These early volcanoes created about 90% of the island's total volume. Later, a process called rejuvenation began around 3.5 million years ago. This phase created the Las Cañadas volcano. About 200,000 years ago, a catastrophic landslide occurred. This massive movement of earth swept the peak away to the north. This event left behind the Las Cañadas caldera, which is a large, horseshoe-shaped depression.

This small cone has a summit crater that is 10 meters wide and 10 meters deep. Another prominent feature is Pico Viejo. This secondary cone emerges on the western slopes of the main peak. Its crater is much larger, measuring 250 meters in diameter and 170 meters deep.
