Still, poets often preferred using multiples of four lines. Poets often chose lines with five sounds. Later, lines with seven sounds became very popular. This gave the poems a special rhythm and flow.
The history of this poetry is very long and deep. Tang poets learned from traditions that were over a thousand years old. They were influenced by older works like the Shijing.
There are many amazing facts about these collections. The Complete Tang Poems includes over 48,900 poems. These were written by more than 2,200 different authors. Two of the most famous poets were Li Bai and Du Fu. Sadly, many poems were lost when the capital city, Changan, was damaged by war. Even so, a huge amount of work still survives today.

Tang poetry refers to the vast body of verse written during or around China's Tang dynasty. This dynasty lasted from June 18, 618, to June 4, 907. It included the reign of Wu Zetian from 690 to 705. This era is widely celebrated as the Golden Age of Chinese poetry.
The primary poetic form during this period was known as shi. These poems were constructed using rhyming couplets. While there was no strict limit on the total number of lines, poets preferred using multiples of four. Rhythm was created through specific syllable counts in each line. Pentasyllabic lines, which use five syllables, had been a dominant meter since the second century C.E. By the eighth century, heptasyllabic lines, or seven-syllable lines, grew significantly in popularity. Other forms like fu continued to be written, and the ci form began to rise during this time.
Historians often divide the era into four chronological stages. These stages are Early Tang, High Tang, Middle Tang, and Late Tang. The periodization often follows a system established by the Ming dynasty scholar Gao Bing. This system treats the High Tang period as the era of superior quality. The High Tang is also called the Flourishing Tang or Golden Tang.
The High Tang period produced the most famous names in Chinese literature. This era included various specialized groups of writers. The "Fields and Gardens Poets Group" included the famous poet and painter Wang Wei. The "Borders and Frontier Fortress Poets Group" focused on different themes. The two most celebrated figures of this entire age were Li Bai and Du Fu. Both men lived through the An Lushan Rebellion, a catastrophic event between 755 and 763. This conflict had a profound impact on their written work.
Middle Tang poetry emerged during a time of rebuilding and social recovery. This period faced challenges like high taxes and official corruption. Poets built upon the formal foundations laid by Li Bai and Du Fu. Some writers, like Dai Shulun, used yuefu poetry to criticize the duties of officials. Others focused on the Landscape Style Poem. There was also a group called the "Ten Talents of the Dali Period." They often preferred writing about peaceful landscapes and seclusion rather than social woes.
The sheer scale of this literary tradition is immense. The anthology titled "The Complete Tang Poems" contains over 48,900 poems. These works were written by more than 2,200 different authors. Despite this large number, much was lost to history. War damaged the Tang capital of Changan in the eighth and ninth centuries. This destruction caused many records and writings to vanish. Even so, the surviving collection is larger than any previous period in Chinese history.
Tang poetry remains connected to many other cultural disciplines. It is closely linked to the art of calligraphy. For example, the only surviving example of Li Bai's calligraphy is a poem. It shows how writing and poetry were seen as a single expressive act.
