People in China have written for a long time.
Chinese literature has a very long history. It began with old records and songs.

Poetry is also a big part of this culture. The Shijing is a famous collection of poems. These poems use songs and nature to show feelings. Another set of poems is the Chuci. These poems are very emotional and wild.
In the past, people made books in new ways. They used woodblock printing to make many copies. Later, a man named Bi Sheng made movable type. This used small pieces to print words. This helped many people learn to read and write. New ideas could spread through China much faster. Writing remains a vital way to share stories and wisdom.
Chinese literature is a huge collection of stories, poems, and ideas. It has lasted for thousands of years. It began with very old records and songs.
Writing changed how people learned over time. During the Tang dynasty, people used woodblock printing. This method helped make many copies of books. Later, a man named Bi Sheng invented movable type. He did this during the Song dynasty between 990 and 1051. This new way of printing helped spread knowledge fast. It allowed more people to read and learn. New ideas could travel across China more easily.
Many famous books were written to teach big ideas. During the Eastern Zhou period, many thinkers shared their views. This time was called the Hundred Schools of Thought. Some wrote about how to lead, while others wrote about nature.
Poetry is another vital part of this tradition. The Shijing is a very old collection of poems. It has over 300 poems with many different styles. Some sound like folk music or songs for festivals.
History and large books also played a big role. Sima Qian wrote the Shiji about 2,000 years ago. He is a very famous historian. He wrote about history from the mythical Xia dynasty. Later, people made huge books called encyclopedias. The Yongle Encyclopedia had 50 million characters. The Complete Classics Collection of Ancient China was even larger. It had over 100 million characters across 800,000 pages. These books helped keep all the knowledge safe.
Chinese literature is a vast and ancient tradition spanning thousands of years. It began with early inscriptions and court archives. Over time, it grew into a massive collection of philosophy, history, and art. Some scholars refer to this body of work as Sinophone literature. This tradition connects the earliest recorded thoughts to modern written works. It reflects the deep values and evolving language of the Chinese people.
Writing technology changed how knowledge moved through society. During the Tang dynasty, woodblock printing became widespread. This allowed for many copies of a single text to be made. Later, during the Song dynasty, a man named Bi Sheng invented movable type printing. He lived from 990 to 1051. This invention helped spread written information much faster across China. As printing improved, more people could access books and new ideas.
Early literature was shaped by many different oral traditions. These included musical practices, divination, and ritual ceremonies. Some scholars, like Liu Shipei, even traced literature back to religious spells. During the Eastern Zhou dynasty, a period called the Hundred Schools of Thought emerged. This era produced many important philosophical works. Most of these texts were didactic, meaning they were meant to teach. They focused on ideas rather than fictional stories. Notable examples include the works of Confucianism, Daoism, Mohism, and Legalism.
Confucian texts held immense power in Chinese culture. In the 12th century, the Four Books and Five Classics became the basis for imperial examinations. This meant these nine books were the center of the educational system. The Five Classics include the I Ching, a divination manual, and the Classic of Poetry. The Four Books include the Analects, which contains sayings from Confucius. These texts taught people about virtue, education, and social roles. Because of these exams, these specific writings shaped the minds of government officials for centuries.
History was recorded with great care by professional historians. Sima Qian was a vital figure in this tradition. He wrote the Shiji, or Records of the Grand Historian, during the Han dynasty. His work covered history from the mythical Xia dynasty to his own time. He is often compared to the Greek writer Herodotus. Sima Qian sought to remain objective and non-biased. This approach influenced many later historians. This tradition eventually grew into the Twenty-Four Histories, which were compiled for successive dynasties.
Poetry is another pillar of this literary world. The Shijing, or Classic of Poetry, is an ancient collection from northern China. It contains over 300 poems that range from folk songs to ceremonial hymns. These poems often use a style called bi, which uses nature to express emotion. In contrast, the Chuci poems from southern China are more intense. They were written by Qu Yuan and Song Yu. These works often feature fantastic descriptions and a dramatic rhythm.
Chinese scholars also created massive encyclopedias to organize all known knowledge. The Yongle Encyclopedia, from the Ming dynasty, contained 50 million characters. Later, the Qing dynasty produced even larger works. The Complete Classics Collection of Ancient China featured over 100 million characters. This collection spanned more than 800,000 pages. It was printed using copper-metal movable type. These enormous books show the incredible scale of Chinese intellectual history.
