Long ago, people in Syria wanted change.

In March 2011, people in Syria began to protest. They wanted more freedom from their leaders. The leaders were part of the Ba'athist regime. This group was led by Bashar al-Assad.
The government used force to stop the protests. This led to a long civil war. Many different groups joined the fight. Some groups were called rebels.
Many countries helped during the war. For example, Russia and Iran helped the government. The United States and Turkey helped other groups.
The war lasted for almost 14 years. It was a very hard time. Millions of people had to flee their homes. They went to places like Lebanon and Jordan to stay safe.
In late 2024, the war changed quickly. Rebel groups took control of many cities. Bashar al-Assad left the country. A new government was formed in Damascus.
Now, a new leader named Ahmed al-Sharaa is president. People are working to build a new Syria.
The Syrian civil war was a very long and difficult conflict. It began in March 2011 with the Syrian revolution. At that time, many people held large protests and rallies. They wanted more democracy and freedom from their leaders. These leaders were part of the Ba'athist regime. Bashar al-Assad was the leader of this government.
The war grew because of how the government responded to the people. The Assad regime used lethal force against the protesters. This caused many people to leave the government. It also led to the start of armed opposition groups. Eventually, the civilian uprising turned into a full civil war. This fighting lasted for almost 14 years.
Many different groups fought for control during the war. The Syrian Arab Armed Forces fought to keep the Assad government in power. They received help from countries like Iran and Russia. Iran began helping the government in 2013. Russia started its own military help in 2015.
Life in Syria changed deeply because of the fighting. The war caused a huge refugee crisis for the world. Millions of people had to flee their homes to find safety. Many went to nearby countries like Lebanon, Jordan, and Turkey. Some even traveled very far to countries like Germany.
In December 2024, the war reached a major turning point. Rebel groups launched a big offensive that moved very quickly. They captured the city of Aleppo in only three days. This gave the revolutionaries a lot of momentum. Bashar al-Assad fled the country and went to Moscow.
The Syrian civil war was a massive and complex armed conflict. It began in March 2011 during the wider Arab Spring movement. At first, the conflict started as a popular revolution. People held large-scale protests and pro-democracy rallies across the country. They were unhappy with the Ba'athist regime led by Bashar al-Assad. This regime had been in power for many years.
The conflict escalated because of the government's reaction to the protests. The Assad regime used lethal force against the demonstrators. This response caused many people to defect from the government. Armed opposition groups began to form to fight the regime. What started as a civilian uprising eventually became a full-scale civil war. This war lasted for almost 14 years.
Many different factions fought for control over Syrian territory. The Syrian Arab Armed Forces fought to maintain the Assad government. They received significant military and financial support from Iran and Russia. Iran launched a military intervention in 2013. Russia followed with its own intervention in 2015.
Other groups also fought for their own specific goals. In 2014, the Islamic State (IS) seized control of Eastern Syria and Western Iraq. This led a United States-led coalition to launch an aerial bombing campaign. This coalition also provided support to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The SDF is a Kurdish-dominated coalition led by the People's Defense Units (YPG).
The war was marked by extreme violence and humanitarian crises. The use of chemical weapons was a deadly feature of the war. This was most often done by Syrian government forces. The Ghouta sarin attack was a notable example of this.
A major turning point occurred in late 2024. In November 2024, HTS and the SNA launched a major offensive. They captured the city of Aleppo in just three days. This gave the revolutionaries momentum across the whole country. HTS captured Hama and moved toward Homs. On December 8, 2024, Bashar al-Assad fled to Moscow. The city of Homs fell to HTS, and southern rebels entered Damascus.
The war changed the political structure of the nation. In January 2025, a new government was announced in Damascus. Ahmed al-Sharaa, the former leader of HTS, was appointed president. The new government decided to dissolve several militias. These groups were integrated into the Syrian Ministry of Defense. However, new challenges appeared shortly after. A Druze insurgency formed in the Suweida Governorate following clashes with the government.
