Symon Vasyliovych Petliura was a prominent Ukrainian revolutionary, politician, and journalist.

He is best known as the Supreme Commander of the Ukrainian People's Army (UNA). He also served as a central leader of the Ukrainian People's Republic. His life was defined by the struggle for Ukrainian independence during the turbulent years of the Russian Civil War. Petliura's influence spanned military command, political governance, and influential journalism.

Petliura was born into a family of Cossack heritage in a suburb of Poltava.

His father ran a transportation business, while his mother was the daughter of an Orthodox hieromonk, which is a type of priest-monk. Initially, Petliura studied at the Russian Orthodox Seminary in Poltava from 1895 to 1901. He originally intended to follow a religious path and become an Orthodox priest. However, his interests shifted toward socialism and Ukrainian nationalism during his studies. In 1898, he joined the Hromada society, a group focused on Ukrainian interests. This involvement led to his expulsion from the seminary in 1901.

Before rising to political power, Petliura built a prolific career as a journalist. He moved between several cities, including Yekaterinodar, Kyiv, Lemberg, and Saint Petersburg. In Lemberg, which is now known as Lviv, he worked with famous intellectuals like Ivan Franko. Because the Ukrainian language was outlawed in the Russian Empire by the Ems Ukaz of 1876, Petliura often used pseudonyms to publish his work. He edited several publications, such as the magazine *Vil’na Ukrayina* and the newspaper *The Council*. He also served as the chief editor of the Russian-language journal *Ukrayinskaya Zhizn* from 1912 to 1914. His writing focused on spreading Ukrainian culture and news.

Political upheaval in 1917 transformed Petliura from a journalist into a military leader. Following the February Revolution, which overthrew the Tsarist monarchy, the Ukrainian People's Republic was proclaimed. Petliura was elected the first Secretary for Military Affairs for the Central Council of Ukraine.

In late 1918, he participated in the Anti-Hetman Uprising to overthrow a pro-German regime. This movement restored the Republic and led to the formation of the Directorate of Ukraine. By February 1919, after the Bolsheviks captured the capital, Petliura became the leader of the Directorate. He spent the next ten months fighting to defend the republic against Bolshevik and White Russian forces.

Petliura's military leadership was marked by constant conflict and shifting alliances. To counter the Bolshevik threat, he entered a military alliance with Józef Piłsudski of Poland in April 1920.

This agreement established a border on the River Zbruch and exchanged military aid for territorial concessions. Although Polish and Ukrainian forces successfully attacked Kyiv in May 1920, they were eventually forced to retreat to Warsaw. The Red Army maintained control over much of Ukraine, preventing the country from securing full independence. This military failure forced Petliura to lead a government-in-exile from Poland and later from Paris.

During the chaos of the Civil War, the Ukrainian People's Army was involved in violent pogroms. A pogrom is a violent, organized attack against a specific community, in this case, Jewish civilians. These attacks resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of Jewish people.

Historians continue to debate Petliura's exact role in these events. Some argue he was responsible, while others suggest he did not take sufficient steps to prevent the massacres. This period of violence remains one of the most controversial aspects of his leadership and legacy.

Petliura's life ended in violence while he lived in exile in France. In May 1926, he was walking in the Latin Quarter of Paris when he was approached by Sholem Schwarzbard. Schwarzbard, a Jewish anarchist, shot Petliura five times. Schwarzbard stated that he killed Petliura to avenge the thousands of Jewish victims of the pogroms in Ukraine.

During the subsequent trial, the defense argued that Schwarzbard was acting in retribution for the loss of over 50,000 Jewish lives. The jury ultimately acquitted Schwarzbard, and Petliura died in a hospital later that same day.
