Sudirman was a central military leader during the Indonesian National Revolution. He served as the commander-in-chief of the Indonesian armed forces. His early life was shaped by both noble traditions and commoner values. He was raised in Cilacap by his uncle, Raden Cokrosunaryo. This upbringing taught him the work ethic of the "wong cilik," or common people.

Before his military career, Sudirman was a dedicated educator and community leader. He worked at a Muhammadiyah-run elementary school in Cilacap. He started as a teacher and eventually became the headmaster. As a headmaster, his monthly wages grew from three gulden to twelve and a half gulden. He was known as a democratic leader who could mediate between feuding teachers. He also led the Muhammadiyah Youth Group in the Banyumas District. In this role, he organized religious and secular activities for young people.

Sudirman's life changed when the Japanese occupation began in 1942. The Japanese forces forced the Dutch colonial government to surrender.

During this time, Sudirman helped organize air raid preparation teams in Cilacap. He established watchposts to keep the local citizens safe. In 1944, he joined the Defenders of the Homeland, known as PETA. This was a military organization sponsored by the Japanese. He served as a battalion commander in Banyumas. While in PETA, he had to manage a rebellion by fellow soldiers.

After Indonesia proclaimed independence on August 17, 1945, Sudirman moved into high-level military roles. He traveled to Jakarta to meet President Sukarno.

He was tasked with overseeing the surrender of Japanese soldiers in Banyumas. This led him to establish the Division of the People's Safety Body. On November 12, 1945, a major election was held in Yogyakarta. The military needed to choose a commander-in-chief. Sudirman won a close vote against Oerip Soemohardjo. He was officially confirmed in this role on December 18, 1945.

Leading the revolution was physically and mentally exhausting for Sudirman. He faced many failed diplomatic negotiations with Dutch forces. These included the Linggadjati Agreement and the Renville Agreement. He also dealt with internal political struggles, such as a coup d'état attempt in 1948. These stresses affected his health significantly. He suffered from tuberculosis, a serious lung disease. By November 1948, his right lung had collapsed. Despite his illness, he remained committed to the cause of independence.

Even when very ill, Sudirman refused to stop fighting. In December 1948, the Dutch launched an assault on the Indonesian capital.
