He served as the sixth president of Indonesia from 2004 to 2014. This period was significant because he won the first direct presidential election in the nation's history. He was the second president to come from a military background following the era of Suharto. In Indonesia, he is widely recognized by his initials, SBY. His name has deep Javanese and Sanskrit roots. It roughly translates to a "well behaved knight on a war mission."

Born on September 9, 1949, in Tremas, Yudhoyono grew up in a lower-middle-class family. His father, Raden Soekotjo, had a career in the military. As a child, Yudhoyono was an academic achiever who enjoyed writing poems and short stories. He was also active in music and sports, even starting a volleyball club and a band. His desire to become a soldier grew after he visited the Indonesian Armed Forces Academy, known as AKABRI, while in fifth grade. Although he missed his initial registration after high school, he later prepared for the military through engineering and vocational studies.

Yudhoyono officially entered AKABRI in 1970 after passing his entrance tests in Bandung.
