The earliest phase began around 3100 BC. This phase consisted of a circular earth bank and a ditch. The builders used Seaford chalk to create these earthworks. Within this area, they dug 56 pits known as Aubrey holes. These holes were named after the 17th-century antiquarian John Aubrey. Around 2900 to 2600 BC, a second phase occurred. During this time, timber structures may have been built inside the enclosure. The site also functioned as a cremation cemetery during this period.

Stone construction became the focus around 2600 BC.

During this stage, builders dug two concentric arrays of holes called the Q and R holes. These holes held up many standing stones. The famous large sarsen circle was placed between 2600 BC and 2400 BC. The bluestones were likely positioned between 2400 and 2200 BC. Some researchers suggest the bluestones might have been at the site as early as 3000 BC. This long timeline shows that the site was a pivotal place for many millennia. The construction required immense coordination and labor.

One of the most impressive aspects is the transport of the bluestones.

These stones are made of types like dolerite, which is an igneous rock. Evidence suggests they were moved from the Preseli Hills in Pembrokeshire, Wales. This is a very long distance from the site in England. A 2019 study found evidence of Megalithic quarrying in Wales. This indicates that humans, not glaciers, moved the stones. Some theories suggest the stones were part of a previous circle at Waun Mawn. That circle was dismantled before the stones were reused at Stonehenge. Archaeologists have also discovered that Stonehenge served as a significant burial ground.

Excavations have uncovered human bone deposits dating back to 3000 BC. In 2013, a team led by Mike Parker Pearson found over 50,000 cremated bone fragments. These remains belonged to 63 different individuals. Analysis showed that these people included men, women, and children. Strontium content in the bones suggests many came from near the bluestone sources in Wales. This implies that the people who built the monument may have migrated to the area. The site was a place where many different people were honored.

The monument also has a deep connection to astronomy.
