In the late 19th century, engineers developed the compound steam engine. This type of engine uses multiple expansion to increase efficiency. It works by taking exhaust steam from a high-pressure cylinder and sending it to a lower-pressure cylinder. 

Many inventors tried to build the first working steamboats. In 1783, Claude de Jouffroy built the Pyroscaphe in France. It was a paddle steamer that traveled upstream for fifteen minutes before the engine failed. In 1788, John Fitch successfully trialed a boat in Philadelphia. He later ran a commercial service on the Delaware River. His boat carried as many as 30 passengers at a time. However, Fitch was not a commercial success because wagon roads were already quite good. In Scotland, William Symington built the Charlotte Dundas, which is considered the first practical steamboat.
The Charlotte Dundas proved that steam power could do real work. In 1803, it towed two 70-ton barges for 30 kilometers along a canal. It took only nine and a quarter hours to finish the trip. In America, Robert Fulton achieved commercial success with the North River Steamboat. In 1807, this boat carried passengers between New York City and Albany. The trip took 32 hours. Other inventors like John Stevens pushed technology further. His ship, the Little Juliana, was the first to use a screw propeller in 1804. 
Steamboats eventually moved from rivers to the deep ocean. Richard Wright's "Experiment" was the first sea-going steamboat in 1813. Later, in 1819, the Savannah became the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean.
