In the 1500s, a Spanish engineer named Blasco de Garay built ships with manual paddles. One ship, the La Trinidad, was very fast in 1543. Later, Marquis Claude de Jouffroy built the first real paddle steamer in France in 1774. This boat sailed on the Doubs River in 1776.

Many famous inventors helped make these boats successful. William Symington built a boat that hauled heavy barges in 1802. Robert Fulton's Clermont was a big success in New York in 1807. In the United States, Captain Henry Shreve made better boats for the Mississippi River. Because of him, river landings grew from 21 in 1814 to over 1,200 by 1833. One large sternwheeler named the Sprague was built in 1901. She carried coal and oil until 1948.

Today, we do not use steam to power most big ships. Most modern boats use a screw propeller instead. However, you can still see paddle wheels in fun places. Some boats are used as floating restaurants or casinos.

The mechanism of a paddle steamer relies on a large steel framework wheel. The outer edge of this wheel is fitted with many regularly spaced blades. These blades are called floats or buckets.

As the engine rotates the wheel, the bottom quarter of the wheel travels under the water. The blades push against the water to create thrust, which can move the boat forward or backward. Some advanced designs use a "feathering" method to improve efficiency. This method uses linkages and an eccentric wheel to keep the blades closer to a vertical position while they are submerged. To prevent splashing, the upper part of the wheel is often enclosed in a paddlebox.

There are three primary types of paddle wheel steamers. The first is the sidewheeler, which has one paddle wheel mounted on each side of the ship. These were the dominant mode of propulsion until the 1850s. Sidewheelers can be very maneuverable because some can move the paddles at different speeds or even in opposite directions. The second type is the sternwheeler, which has a single paddle wheel located at the stern, or the back, of the boat.

History shows that humans have experimented with paddle wheels for centuries. The Roman engineer Vitruvius described multi-geared paddle wheels used as ship odometers. Ancient Chinese records from the 5th century also mention paddle-wheel ships.

By 1833, that number had grown to over 1,200. One of the last large sternwheelers on the Mississippi was the Sprague, which operated until 1948.

Engineers had to solve many problems regarding stability and design. For example, some sidewheelers used solid drive shafts to connect the wheels. This limited their maneuverability and gave them a wide turning radius. Other ships used paddle clutches to allow the wheels to turn independently. However, crews found that independent movement could be dangerous. If passengers moved to one side of the ship, the weight shift could cause the vessel to capsize. Because of this, many sidewheelers were operated with the clutches out. Paddle tugs were an exception, as they did not carry passengers and could use independent movement safely.

Paddle steamers played a major role in connecting people and goods. In Europe, they took tourists from industrial cities to seaside resorts via river cruises. These boats often featured luxurious saloons to compete with the growing railway industry. In North America, they were essential for moving bulk cargo after the American Civil War. Even though modern technology has largely moved on to propellers, the paddle steamer remains a significant part of maritime history. You can still see their influence in replica vessels and small, pedal-powered novelty boats found in many parks today.
