The St. Lawrence Seaway is a special path for ships. 

To move ships, the seaway uses locks. A lock is a part of a canal. It helps ships move up or down hills of water. 
Today, the seaway is very busy. It helps move many things like grain and steel. In 2002, ships moved 222 million tonnes of cargo. The seaway helps many people earn money through business. It is like a water highway for the world.

Because the river has rapids and dams, ships cannot always sail straight through. The seaway works by using a series of channels and locks. 
Building this waterway took a very long time and much planning. People had proposed a deep waterway since the 1890s. Many leaders wanted to build it to help the economy grow. They believed moving grain to Europe was very important. In 1951, Canadian Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent said Canada would build it alone. Eventually, the United States and Canada worked together on the project. On May 13, 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the Wiley-Dondero Seaway Act. This law allowed both countries to start building the system together.
Construction was a massive job that required many people. About 22,000 workers were employed on the project at one time. 
Today, the seaway still moves a huge amount of goods. In 2002, ships moved 222 million tonnes of cargo through the system. Much of this cargo is steel and grain.

Designing the seaway required careful planning regarding ship size. In the 1950s, engineers did not build the locks to match the Panama Canal's limits. The Panama Canal uses a standard called Panamax. Instead, the seaway designers matched the smaller locks of the Welland Canal. This created a specific size limit known as Seawaymax.
Developing this waterway was a long and difficult political process. Proposals for a deep waterway began as early as the 1890s. For decades, governments debated how to combine navigation with hydropower projects. In 1932, a treaty of intent was signed between the U.S. and Canada. However, it failed to gain the necessary two-thirds vote for ratification in the U.S. Senate. Later, in 1951, Canadian Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent suggested Canada might build the project alone. This pressure eventually led to a joint effort between the two nations. On May 13, 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the Wiley-Dondero Seaway Act. This act authorized joint construction and established the U.S. authority for the project.
Construction was a massive undertaking that required immense labor and funding. At one point, the project employed 22,000 workers. The total cost to build the seaway was C$470 million. Of that amount, the Canadian government paid $336.2 million. 
Today, the seaway remains a vital artery for global trade. In 2002, ships moved 222 million tonnes of cargo through the system. This includes important shipments like steel and grain. In a typical year, seaway steel imports account for about 6% of all U.S. steel imports. Grain is another major commodity, with seaway exports making up about 3.6% of U.S. overseas grain shipments in 2004. While Europe was once a major buyer, many shipments now head to Asia, Africa, and South America. In the United States alone, Great Lakes and seaway shipping generates $3.4 billion in annual business revenue.
The seaway connects many different economic and environmental systems. It provides a way to move Quebec-Labrador iron ore cheaply. It also links the heartland of North America to the global market. Some people believe the seaway's opening caused the decline of the Erie Canal. However, railroads had already begun replacing the canal before the seaway was finished. The seaway remains a complex intersection of engineering, international cooperation, and global commerce.
