Lake Ontario is a big lake.

Water flows into the lake from a river. Then, the water flows out to the ocean. This helps the water move through the land.
In winter, the water gets very cold. Sometimes, a layer of ice forms on top.
Cold winds blow over the water. This wind picks up moisture. It makes a lot of snow fall on the land.
Many plants and animals live near the shore. It is a busy place for nature.
Lake Ontario is one of the five Great Lakes.
Water flows into the lake from the Niagara River. It flows out through the Saint Lawrence River. This river leads to the Atlantic Ocean. The lake is the smallest Great Lake by surface area. However, it has more water than Lake Erie.
Many cities are near the water. Toronto and Hamilton are in Canada. Rochester and Watertown are in the U.S. The lake is very deep. In some parts, it is 802 feet deep.
In winter, the lake gets very cold. Most of the lake does not freeze. But, ice sheets often form along the shore. Sometimes, the whole lake freezes over. Cold winds blow over the water. These winds pick up moisture and make heavy snow. This is called lake-effect snow. Many plants and animals live in the wetlands near the shore.
