It was between the United States and the Soviet Union. These two nations were rivals during the Cold War. They both wanted to show they had the best technology. This race began in the mid-1950s.

The Soviet Union took an early lead. In 1957, they launched Sputnik 1. This was the first artificial satellite in space.

A few years later, they sent the first human into space. His name was Yuri Gagarin.

This led the United States to set a new goal. President John F. Kennedy wanted to land a man on the Moon. The U.S. built a huge rocket called the Saturn V. In July 1969, the Apollo 11 mission reached the Moon.

This race started because of rockets used for weapons. After World War II, both nations wanted better missiles. These missiles could carry heavy things across the world. Scientists used old rocket ideas to build new ones. They used parts from German V-2 rockets to start.

This work led to much bigger machines. These machines could finally reach the stars.

The competition moved very fast in the 1950s. On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1. This was the first man-made satellite in space.

These wins gave the Soviet Union an early lead.

The United States built the Saturn V rocket. It was a super heavy-lift vehicle. It was large enough to carry people to the Moon. In July 1969, the Apollo 11 mission finally succeeded.

The race was driven by the development of ballistic missiles. These are large rockets designed to carry payloads over long distances. Following World War II, both nations sought to improve their intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capabilities. An ICBM can strike targets on the other side of the globe very quickly. This created a perceived "missile gap" and increased fears regarding nuclear security. To build these, both countries utilized technology from German V-2 rockets. The V-2 was a liquid-fueled rocket developed by Nazi Germany during the war.

Soviet rocket development began with early liquid-fueled experiments in the 1930s. Pioneers like Sergey Korolev led the creation of the R-7 Semyorka. The R-7 was a massive two-stage rocket with four boosters. It became the world's first true ICBM in August 1957. This same rocket family powered many famous Soviet missions. It launched the first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, in October 1957. It also served as the basis for the Vostok and Soyuz launch vehicles.

In the United States, rocket science progressed through various military and civilian programs. Engineers like Wernher von Braun moved to the U.S. under Operation Paperclip. They worked at the Redstone Arsenal in Alabama to develop new missiles. The U.S. developed the Atlas missile, which used thin stainless steel tanks. These tanks relied on internal pressure to maintain their shape. This design helped reduce the overall weight of the rocket. Later, the U.S. built the Saturn V, a super heavy-lift vehicle. This massive rocket was powerful enough to send humans to the Moon.

The competition produced many historic "firsts" for humanity. The Soviet Union achieved early success with Sputnik 1 in 1957. On April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space. He completed an orbital flight aboard the Vostok 1 spacecraft.

In response, U.S. President John F. Kennedy set a massive goal. On May 25, 1961, he pledged to land a man on the Moon. He demanded this be achieved before the end of the 1960s.

The United States reached this lunar goal in July 1969. The Apollo 11 mission successfully landed humans on the Moon's surface.

Following this, the U.S. landed five more Apollo crews on the Moon. The Soviet Union attempted its own lunar program using the N1 rocket. However, the Soviet N1 program did not succeed. Instead, the USSR focused on the Salyut space station program. They also sent robotic probes to land on Venus and Mars.

Eventually, the intense competition transitioned into a period of cooperation called détente. In April 1972, the two nations agreed to the Apollo–Soyuz Test Project (ASTP). This culminated in July 1975 when U.S. and Soviet spacecraft met in Earth orbit.

The crews used a special international docking standard called APAS-75. This event is often seen as the final act of the Space Race. The collapse of the Soviet Union later allowed for even deeper collaboration. In 1993, the U.S. and the Russian Federation began working on the International Space Station.
