Long ago, a group of people lived by a river. 

One day, a volcano erupted. This changed the land. The ash may have hurt the plants. It may have also hurt the animals. 
Solo Man lived by the Solo River in Java, Indonesia. 
Solo Man had large brains. Their brain size was similar to people today. They lived in a cool woodland. Many big animals lived there too. These included tigers, elephants, and hippopotamuses. 
Scientists found many bones near a village called Ngandong. They found 14 skullcaps and two leg bones. 
Solo Man was a group of people who lived a very long time ago. They were a subspecies of a species called Homo erectus. This group lived along the Solo River in Java, Indonesia. Most scientists believe they lived between 117,000 and 108,000 years ago. This was during a time called the Late Pleistocene. This population is the very last known record of their species. 
These people lived in a special way. They lived in an open woodland area. This place was much cooler than Java is today. Many huge animals lived there too. These included elephants, tigers, and wild cattle. You might also find water buffalo, tapirs, or hippopotamuses there. Solo Man made many useful tools to help them live. They made simple stone flakes and choppers. They might have also used bones to make spears or harpoons. Some tools were even made from stingray stingers. 
Finding these remains was a long and difficult journey. Scientists first dug at a site near Ngandong from 1931 to 1933. This work was led by Willem Frederik Florus Oppenoorth, Carel ter Haar, and Gustav Heinrich Ralph von Koenigswald. However, many things slowed their work down. The Great Depression and World War II caused many delays. The Indonesian War of Independence also made research hard. Later, the remains were moved to different places like Jakarta and Bandung. 
Researchers found many important pieces of bone at the Ngandong site. They found 14 skullcaps and two shinbones, also called tibiae. They also found a piece of the pelvis. One skullcap likely belonged to an elderly female. Another piece was a bone from a child aged three to seven. The skulls had large brains. This brain size was similar to the range we see in modern humans. Some males were likely much bigger than the females. 
Nature may have helped hide these bones for a long time. Scientists think a volcanic eruption might have happened near the river. Ash from a volcano can stop plants from growing. This can cause animals to die from hunger. Large flows of mud and water called lahars might have swept the bones into the river. The river then moved them to a narrow spot. This created a jam where the bones stayed together. This is how the fossils ended up where we found them.

They also likely used bones to create spears or harpoons. Some tools might have been daggers made from stingray stingers. They also used andesite stone to make bolas or hammerstones. 
The discovery of these fossils was a long and complicated process. Excavations at the Ngandong site began between 1931 and 1933. This work was led by Willem Frederik Florus Oppenoorth, Carel ter Haar, and Gustav Heinrich Ralph von Koenigswald. However, global events caused massive delays in the research. The Great Depression and World War II halted progress for many years. The Indonesian War of Independence also made continued study difficult. The remains were moved several times, including to Batavia and Bandung. Eventually, the fossils were studied in New York and later returned to Indonesia. 
Researchers recovered a specific set of bones from the Ngandong site. The collection includes 14 skullcaps, two tibiae, and a piece of the pelvis. These fossils are categorized into different specimens, such as Skull I, an almost complete skullcap of an elderly female. Skull II was a frontal bone from a child aged three to seven. Skull V was a likely male skullcap, noted for its great length. The two tibiae, or shinbones, also provided important clues. Tibia B was nearly complete and likely belonged to an adult female. These diverse pieces allow scientists to reconstruct the group's physical variety. 
Scientists have developed a theory about how these bones were preserved. They believe a volcanic eruption may have caused the deaths of these individuals. Volcanic ash can poison vegetation, leading to starvation among herbivores and humans. After the eruption, large flows of mud and water called lahars likely moved through the river channels. These lahars could have swept the carcasses into the Solo River. The bones may have become trapped in a narrow part of the river channel. This created a jam of debris that helped preserve the fossils in the sediment. 
Determining the exact age of Solo Man has been a challenge for researchers. Early estimates suggested they lived around 117,000 years ago. However, different dating methods have provided different results. In 1988 and 1989, uranium–thorium dating suggested a range of 200,000 to 30,000 years ago. Later, electron spin resonance dating of teeth suggested a date between 53,300 and 27,000 years ago. Even more recent gamma spectroscopy in 2008 suggested they lived 70,000 to 40,000 years ago. These varying numbers show how difficult it is to date ancient remains. 
Understanding Solo Man is vital to the study of human evolution. They were once thought to be the direct ancestors of Aboriginal Australians. However, modern research suggests they likely have no living descendants. This is because they lived long before modern humans arrived in the area about 55,000 to 50,000 years ago. The species likely went extinct as tropical rainforests took over their preferred habitats. Their story helps scientists map the movement and disappearance of different human groups across the globe.
