These fossils are very old. One part is about 700,000 years old. The other part is much older. It is about 1.6 million years old. This makes them some of the oldest humans in East Asia. They lived in mild grasslands near mountains. Many animals lived there too, like giant pandas and elephants.

Lantian Man refers to a subspecies of *Homo erectus* found in China. These early humans lived on the Loess Plateau in the Shaanxi Province. They also represent the second-oldest dated *Homo erectus* found outside of Africa. 
Scientists discovered two main fossil sets in the 1960s. The first was a nearly complete mandible, or lower jawbone, at Chenchiawo Village in 1963. This jawbone was found in a thick layer of reddish clays. The second find was a partial skull from Gongwangling Village in 1964. This skull was found at the foothills of the Qinling Mountains. These fossils help researchers trace the timeline of human migration. 
The anatomy of Lantian Man shows many ancient traits. The Gongwangling skull has a heavy, continuous brow ridge. It also has a low, receding forehead. The bones of the skull are extraordinarily thick. The brain volume of this skull was about 780 cc. This is much smaller than the average 1,130 to 1,270 cc found in modern humans. However, it is similar to other archaic humans living in Africa at that time. 
Determining the exact age of these fossils has been a complex process. Early estimates in the 1970s suggested different ages based on animal remains. Later, scientists used palaeomagnetism to study the magnetic properties of the soil. In 2015, researcher Zhu-Yu Zhu identified a gap in the soil layers. This new research placed the Gongwangling skull between 1.65 and 1.59 million years ago. The Chenchiawo mandible dates to about 710 to 684 thousand years ago. 
Lantian Man lived in a mild, semi-humid environment. The landscape was a mix of grasslands and forests. Scientists found many animal fossils in the same layers. These included giant pandas, elephants, and tapirs. They also found predators like tigers, leopards, and saber-toothed cats. This variety of animals suggests the area was a productive habitat. The presence of both forest and grassland animals shows a diverse ecosystem. 
These early humans were skilled at making stone tools. They used local river stones like quartzite and quartz. They manufactured heavy-duty tools such as handaxes, picks, and cleavers. They often used a technique called bipolar percussion. This involves smashing a stone core to shape it. Many of these tools are part of the Acheulean industry. This type of toolmaking is usually associated with Africa and Western Eurasia. 
The discovery of Lantian Man changed how scientists view human history. It helped break the "Movius Line," a theory that separated stone tool styles. The presence of Acheulean tools in China showed that technology was more widespread. It also suggests that *Homo erectus* dispersed very rapidly out of Africa. The fossils connect East Asian human history to the broader movements of early humans across the globe.
